Frustrated with my Mesa mark IV

Mark IV's aren't that hard to dial in. My settings:

Triode, Class A, Mid Gain (switches) -- Lead channel: Gain 6, Treble 9, Lead Drive 8, Pres 3 (not pulled or pulled), Bass 2, Mid 0, Graphic EQ to taste.

I've always thought they were a little cloudy sounding
lol..I actually understand that feeling and well described. They can be raw and vicious but still congested sounding in the lower mids. It’s the way it’s saturating. It can be as bright as you want but still doesn’t breathe, per se.

Agree. Mark IV is not hard. You can pretty much go with the Fender magic 6 settings to get you in the ball park and tweak to taste. I usually go with Pentode/Simulclass and fat and bright switch pulled and mid gain switch selected.

One thing, I did finally get a good sound with the SD1 and this amp. Whoever told me to turn the treble down, that is the secret. If you keep the treble up high, boosts sound horrible.

Man that’s frustrating. sometimes those Mark IV issues aren’t worth chasing if it keeps happening.

I'm all about Triode and Harmonics mode, very tasty for lead work and not as skull-crushingly loud as full power when you don't need it.

On the IV though, that pull fat control can congest the mids, also I find if both the pull fat and pull bright are used you are gonna lose definition and clarity. Lot's of things to consider when dialing in a clear but heavy tone with a IV. Also it's best to keep the mid control low, all it adds is some lower midrange saturation.

Ya, that was maybe me?? When boosting I keep the treble around 5 or so and it works perfectly with any boost pedal.
