on 10 watt mode i have the output volume at 110clock and master volum at 10oclock
Bypass that mildly tone-sucking master volume section, and you'll find that the amp rips even harder.
And I know it's been said before, but these are finicky amps. You can't just knob twist the way you can with something like an older Marshall and find what makes you happy in 10 seconds.... treble affects the gain, the bass knob is VERY heavy handed (on ch 2, MK 1 mode, you'll likely have the bass nearly all the way off unless you're using the eq section to cut drastically), etc etc.
Get the settings just the way you want them, then turn the channel master up, and you'll likely need to re-do all your other settings a tad
I dunno.. I absolutely adore my MK V. If I had my druthers, I'd own 2 of them... one with 6L6's, and one with EL tubes (that's what I'm currently using), for 6 channels of goodness.
ive found that if you keep the stock mesa preamp tubes in the amp bypassing the loop does make it sound more opened up, but when i swapped the tung sols in there i notice no difference at all actually.....i use the loop so i dont want to keep it bypassed....try some different preamp tubes in there trust me every mesa ive owned sounds amazing with any tubes besides the stock branded mesa tubes (tung sols are my go to preamp tube)
and i ALWAYS keep my output (volume) knob at 11 oclock and tweak my volumes with the channel volumes,.....thats a little trick i learned from speaking with one of the dudes over at mesa, i cant explain exactly what it does but it seems to run the power section a little warmer and makes the mesas sing and sound thicker .... i only used 10 watt mode for the vid cuz it tamed the bass and didnt make the mic on my camera wash out as much
whenever i tweak in my mesas i always start with the gain and the treble, than i go bass, middle, and than prescence.....i find that the treble not only acts as a second gain knob but it actually starts to voice the amp the higher you put it the more the lower mids kick in and the lower you put it the higher mids kick in.....and no matter what amp it is i always eq with my ears and not with my eyes
and for spawnofthesith, i keep my mark 5 in triodes, i find the amp has better pick dynamics and harmonic quality in triodes.....even when i had my mark 4 i used to use triodes cuz i felt the same way about it, the amp just seems to sound more tubey and alive to me in that mode, pentode is cool if you need the exra hard push in volume but honestly this amp has plenty or volume regardless if its in pentode or triode
