When you break it down to the core, you see that it isn't about some sneaky NATO masterplan to get all these pawn states to buy into EU wall, but more about EX Soviet states that lived under Russian oppression and had their identity, language, and culture stripped from them. You don't think that they've always known that they could lose everything they have and find themselves back under Russian rule? It was a no brainer for them to push to join NATO. It's the guarantee they wanted. So it really doesn't matter what Russia wanted because Russia seems to have wanted to create instability in the region and cherry pick what they wanted when they wanted it. Now that said, Ukraine has always been a dodgy state and pushing to join NATO.. they had to know that was kicking the bee-hive. But that said, their right to do it. The better play might have been to invite Russia to join NATO decades ago. That might have straightened them out a bit rather than pushing them to the outside. But all good now, Trump and Putin, best of pals! Everybody take what you want, nobody else matters.
