I'm sure a lot of you saw my other post where I was struggling about getting this Limited Edition Les Paul Standard that was all mahogany. Didn't know if it would take away from "that sound" so I kind of just gave up on it.

I called another guy about a Custom he had and was going to trade him my "Standard" plus cash. So I send some photos. Turns out (and should have known) that my Standard is actually a "Classic".....which explains the green inlays that always made me shake my head. Don't get me wrong, I like my guitar and especially like the "Standard" truss rod cover the guy put on it to trick me but I should have known better. LOL! :D Incredible Hulk inlays should have been my first clue. But it has Motor City pickups in it and sounds great and I can junk it up and play around with different things without ruining value, etc. So that trade didn't happen....

So then I go to a local store that sells a bunch of used stuff. They have TONS of Les Pauls. The guy is a collector. I start picking up different ones from Traditionals to Standards, various years from the past five or so and they are pretty solid but becomes "aww, this one keeps going out of tune" or "this one is clanky sounding" or "where is the gain?". I go over and there is a 89' LP Standard and a 78 LP Standard. Both were great but the 78' had a bunch of modifications. Still was cool though.

Pick up the 89' and just loving it. It had bulk, minor aging which actually made it look better, great string height, great tone, etc. I'm like "oh man, this is great and I can get a great deal on it!". So of course the one great player in the store who sounded phenomenal goes over to those two guitars and is talking to the guy about them. We all get to talking and he says "I can't decide" and looks at me and says "what do you think?" Now the 89' to me is better but the devil, gear nerd, guitarist in me in no way is going to say that one because he'll walk out with it and I'll cry like a schoolgirl. I say "they are both great!", which wasn't a lie.

He goes outside to get on the phone and I'm like "oh well, Murphy's Law again". He walks in and says "well I don't want to get divorced so I better leave, take care!" and walks out. I grab the guitar and walk up to my friend and say "I'll take it!!!". LOL!

It is so true what people on this forum say, you have to play it and have it in your hands. I really dig it and is from a year when I had just graduated high school and went in the military. Nice collector piece and something I can enjoy instead of my F'ing "Classic"!!. :) I'll keep that too. I'm sure this is just the start of my addiction. :)

Classics are great guitars, especially the first years. The inlays can be replaced with non green ones for not a ton of cash. I have a LP Classic Premium Plus with a KILLER amber top with Suhr Aldrichs in it and JP wiring. Great axe !

Enjoy both of your guitars !

Thanks man! Yeah, they are not bad at all and basically a Standard with some changes here and there. I thought it was funny that here I thought I had a Standard and giving myself a hard time for wanting another one and it is not even a Standard!!! LOL. BTW, love Suhr Aldrich pickups. I had one in my old Standard years ago and that pickup is just too awesome for words. Cleans up and the gain is insane and tight as a drum.

BTW it is 11 lbs so might need another hernia surgery down the road. :)

Your Classic is 11 lbs or the ‘89 Standard ? Is the ‘89 a maple neck with rosewood fingerboard ?

The Standard is the 11 lbs one. The Classic feels like it is half that. LOL! The Classic I can kind of whip around and the Standard I have to hold a certain way or will rip my arm out. :)

I have a recent classic and standard, and I actually prefer the classic.

Congrats on the new guitar! Glad you didn’t miss out. Best LP I remember playing was a pretty trashed ‘70s with a refret.

Thanks!! Yeah, isn't that crazy that with all of the different types (Standard, Classic, Traditional, etc.), there is rarely a "one size fits all" type of mentality. I picked up so many of those guitars and it was hit or miss. I know it is a quick fix, but if I pick up a guitar at a store and it is constantly going out of tune, I lose interest. I'm not talking a little bit, but if it is like you barely turn the peg and it drops several octaves. LOL.

I have a Traditinal Pro with the 59 neck also, and 3 81 Customs and an 81 standard, the Customs are my favorites, then the Classic, then the Trad Pro.

I had a chance to get an early 80s Custom years ago from a friend and didn't buy it and kick myself for not getting it. $1000. It needed new frets but would have been worth getting that done.

I almost bought a 59' Reissue yesterday on a whim. But I kept telling myself there are so many other things I can use that money for. Looked awesome though.
