So, I'm looking into Diezel to replace the Cameron....

You guys know my tones, VH4 or Herbert?

also looking at something that'll give me some "different" tones as well as throwing a boost if need be to get my thrashier tones (if needed)....

opinions?

I've had offers for Both the VH4 & a Herbert, as well as numerous other things, Engl being up there in competition with the Diezels....

After owning both the Herbert and the VH4....actually sold the VH4 to get the Herbert. I would pick the VH4.
I just really liked how that amp sounded and played. Every channel to me was about perfect. Got really agressive without being too over the top. Had a great Hard Rock tone on channel 2.
What did you think of the Herbert when playing Rottingcorpses? Its insane sounding isnt it?.....but overall I just liked how the VH4 was.

I LOVED the Herbert, fantastic amp, very cool tone.

my MAIN concern with the VH4 is the sag, you guys now my tones, I like my shit tight as hell, BUT at the same time, I'd like something I can get some different tones out of, thats why I was looking into the VH4, if it'd tighten up with a boost, I'm ok with that.....

But again, I'd be going in blind like I did with the CCV, and I KNOW I can thrash the hell out of the Herbie.

If you were going for raw brutality you might look to the Herbert but to me they can get muffly and the bass can be overwhelming. Definitely has more bass available than any other amp I've played personally and that wasn't always a good thing for me. I liked the clean better on the Herbert but who uses that anyway

For the thrashy stuff like you like I'd go with the VH4. We have pretty similar taste in amps and I'd take the VH4 over a Herbert all day long. Channel 3 is worth the price of admission IMO.

interesting..... wish there were some good thrash clips of the VH4 out there, haven't found any yet.

I would recommend a herbert Mk II knowing what you dig with randall. I think you would be able to dial it in CORRECTLY and not abuse the mid scoop. They are also revoiced and have different transformers than the original series runs.

I played a VH4 and after the honeymoon spell wore off it sounded somewhat thin to me? hard to describe, nothing like the layered complexity of the Herberts. Herberts have always crushed under a microphone and sound great there. Evergrey uses Herberts if you want an example of their tone. If you're getting into the recording side i would highly recommend a Herbert Mk II.

Both are killer but if tight is your comcern go Herbert. That said the Hagen might be an option to???

Between the two, I'd go Herbert. That being said, it def isnt the first amp that comes to mind when I think thrash. FWIW - my thrash tone benchmark is recent Exodus

your speaking my language now...  the good ole boosted Savage 120. :D

Now, if someone were to offer me a SE, I think I'd have to jump all over that. :D

Maybe one of Peters amps the Chimera ,Hydra are pretty friggin tight and aggressive in all the clips I have heard .Played a Gryphon every that was capable of being pretty tight if you wanted .
For Metal thrash those amps sounds great (as well as other styles)

Not trying to hijack but, what about the MKIII was not "tight and thrashy"? To me the MKIII boosted is as tight and thrashy as you can get.

I'm going to throw a curve ball and suggest the DAR FBM 100h
I've personally demoed/played on it and it is a bad mofo

Herbert Mk II
Peters Chimera/Hydra
DAR FBM 100H
Engl SE
Laboga Mr Hector

Alot of hard hitters in the arena to recommend

my vh4 was tighter than my herbert but i hated the tone of the vh4 and loved the tone of the herbert, i still own a herbert and i boost it all the time and its tight enough for me, alex florios gets great tones from his herb.

Here I am thinking the VH4 is already super tight. Curious about that Dar amp though...

I thought the same thing. The VH4 I played was for sure tighter than the Herbert. The Herbert had a flub to it which I thought was due to the overabundance of bass. The bass was also pretty hard to dial out.

the herb does indeed have alot of lows but i keep mine around 11:00 and the depth about 10:30 and they arent as overpowering, the boost also helps tighten it up. the herb has some sag but not as much as say a uberschall or recto, its tighter than either of those amps.

I have both the vh4 and herbert and my herbert loaded with 6l6's is tighter than the vh4.

Honestly, I have had both the Herbert, still have my VH4, and lots of other amps...

I am finding my new ENGL SE EL34to be just awesome for Tight Crunchy Thick and aggressive tone.
It is very tight...and fills in the frequencies that you might think are missing in the VH4...
the ENGL tone is much fuller, and has more bass, but is still quite aggressive.
The VH4 is definitely a cleaner clearer tone, that has a good tone to it.

Here's is the VH4 and ENGL in a very raw form...Ch.3 of the VH4, Lead1 of the ENGL.

Even though not the best audio quality, you can still hear the difference in tone.

Which works for you the best?
