In response to my other thread, I finally got to put them through the paces in my Gibson V. I’m impressed!
To preface this, I’ve used all the Dimarzio “PAF” variants. I’ve also tried numerous boutiques (OX4, Wolfetone, Manlius, BKP, Tyson Tone Lab, etc). My favorites to date are the Gibson Custombucker, Duncan Custom Shop WLH, and Wolfetone MKII Marshallhead.
I found the Dimarzio 36th to be too hot and middy. Cool pup, but not really PAF like. The Dimarzio PAF 59 was just the opposite…….scooped, bright, and sterile. Reminded me of a T-Top. Can’t remember much about the PAF Master other than I really liked the neck.
These 57’s fall between the 36th and 59. Less heat, dipped mids, and more clarity over the 36th…….but top is tamed and more character compared to the 59’s. Really creamy and have that signature PAF honk. Sound nothing like the Gibson 57 Classic to me…..which I find boxy and blurry sounding. The Dimarzios are really open and clear.
At first they were a little muddy, but I backed them down and raised the poles a bit. They are extremely sensitive to minimal adjustments……which most good vintage output pups are.
I’m pretty impressed. Would recommend for an affordable PAF alternative. Not really for anything past early 80’s NWOBHM type stuff though. Though I did tear through Accept’s Restless and Wild and Priest’s Solar Angels.
