What guitar, music, context, home player or band, live or recording?

It's been a long time since I compared them, but this was in my les Paul studio from the mid 90s.

498t- brighter more chimey, decent with gain, a bit thin. Better all around.
Super distortion- instant 80s tone, great for hard rock from that era.

For what you want I would go with the super distortion. Strangely I am kicking around getting a 490r/498t set for my 73 lp custom.....

I've had a late 70's or early 80's Super Distortion in a newer Flying V for a while and I love it for classic hard rock. It doesn't have the cocked, mid honk I would hear in newer SD's. It's a single conductor and reads in the mid 13's where SD's now I think are around 12. For 70's and 80's Hard rock it is a perfect choice. If I was choosing between new pickups I would probably go with a 35th Anni JB.

I need the brightness/topend so would the 498t be a better chose.I can always hit the front end with a clean boost to drive it harder.

I had the 498T in a LP custom and it was about as fat as you could get. Great string to string clarity. Great chunky rythym tones as well. I love this pickup. I didn't find it that bright.

I should have mentioned the lp studio I had was always a bit thin in the bridge. My lp custom on the other hand is super thick and meaty.

Blackba I finding the samething,I have a lp studio with the 498t and it does sound thin.Would the dimarzio super distortion make up for that.

It did sound thicker to me than the 498t. I had to pull the super distortion out since I was just borrowing it from a friend. I wished I would have tried the suhr Aldrich in my lp studio.

If your 498t is black and you want to try an Aldrich, let me know, maybe we could work a swap. The Aldrich was too hot in my lp custom, but I have another chrome covered on on an lp standard LE, where it's awesome.

I need to play with with the 498t alittle more and then deside, the super D might be the ticket.

Imo, a VERY important point you bring up. The same pickup, in different guitar/amp/fx/speaker combinations will yield various results.

I LOVE it for doing these sorts of tones. For other things, I use other things too. ;)

Steve, is bright and cutting the last time I played a super D it was in the 70s.Forgot what it sounds like.

Not super bright - cuts nicely because of the high mids. I love 'em in my Charvels I'll tell ya that...
