Do you need a pad behind a neck plate for a tele??????

Working on another Tele project and will report when finished, I have Ratter and GreazyGeorge involved.........................

Anyways, won a vintage 52 RI tele veck plate and while putzing around I forgot about the backing for some plates........do I need one?????
