Well... at least I have my suspicions confirmed. I did remove the speaker jack plate and pulled pretty hard and nothing. There are no side handles on a 2x12 so that's out for angel of attack.
I'll leave it be for now, thanks for all the info about Mesa using some kind of sealant or calk.
Yeah, man when someone said sealant I was thinking of a 'sealed cab' like an iso cab where it is done like that on purpose. Granted I've never tried to take the back off my Mesa 4x12. If you take a putty knife and go all the way around wiggling it back and forth I don't think you will hurt the tolex but ymmv. If you have an electric drill and can put it in reverse you might be able to jerry rig some force but again YMMV and I'm still thinking through how that would work I know there are small hydraulic jacks out there as well but these are all very desperate measures.
Taking all the screws out and then putting in one longer screw and tugging on that for leverage seems like a good idea. Just use same diameter.

Oh shit, no side handles. Sorry I missed that not so fun fact lol.
I even have a stock recto 212 myself like that, an older one without the caster plates on the bottom.
