Does the Mark V just sound better on Boogie cabs?

Mine is early and doesn't sound largely different than the petrucci's settings to my ear...

Other than he is a much better player!

I do admit the combo seemed thin and spikey , the head I bought ( early model ) sounds warm , gained out and glorious!

I didn't like the first 2 early Vs I played. But I played one about a month ago at GC and it sounded really good. Had me GASing. And I did play it through a 2x12 recto cab this time.

Guess what? I played another one today, a head on a Mesa 4x12. I wasn't thrilled by it at all.  Funny, it reminded me of the one i owned, it was on the dull side tonewise and didn't seem to have the same amount if gain as the one i played yesterday. It was serial number 37** somewhere in the upper 3,000's. I tweaked for a while and, well it was ok sounding, but i walked away thinking it would be a real bad move to pick one of these up since anything i have a love/hate thing with winds up getting sold anyhow.

JJs are known for being dark/dull and all the ones I've used have lacked in the gain department.

Kind of makes me wonder if there's something to the comment above that Mesa started loading the V1 with an SPAX-7 (Chinese preamp tube) instead of an JJ ECC83?

As per the dudes previous post... play one later than a 4xxx and see if there is an improvement???

This Mk V looks cool as hell. The classic Mesa Mk series look

That vid of JP sounds a lot better than his new Mesa/Boogie factory vids...

His factory vids were dry.

The Zoom vid has a Boss delay in the loop.

I have seen a few in the upper 3,000's. The one i played that i thought was cool was in the upper 2,000's. Funny thing, it's 50/50 with me, i play one and like it, the next sounds like crap. And did you hear the one in Lugo's ampfest? When it was working before it caught fire i thought it sounded pretty crappy.

I appreciate that you tried a few and it's been inconsistant. I've only tried one but it was a very positive experience for me. I'll be the first to say that the Mesa Mk series amp aren't perfect but I'll also be one of the first to say that they are great amps and are really fun. I'm done with the buying and selling. From now on it's all about building an amp collection. At some point I will own another Mk IV or V. After talking with you about the inconsistancies you've experienced I doubt I'll buy one mail order. Definitely a try before a buy thing.

For me the game plan is basically this...
Get my 5150II to Jerry/ FJA Mods for the metal mod
Get Dave Friedman to mod my VM
Sell a kidney and some crack and try to get my hands on a Bogner 20TH Anni XTC
Get a Mesa Mk series amp
after this... spend the rest of my life collecting guitars.

There it is. Thats the dream. Oh that and learning how to actually play.

Have you ever thought for a second, that there might not be much of a difference (if at all) in the MKV's you've played....but, that it's more in your head and/or due to the different settings used? Besides owning one, I've heard many other MKV's and they all sounded great. I have a feeling that if we took the ones you've played and switched them around, that you wouldn't be able to correctly pick out the one you "thought" you liked. Just sayin... :dunno:

I dialed them up the same. But at this point i won't bother with the V. I feel that the Electra Dyne paired up with an OD pedal is that best thing Mesa has going. Just IMHO. I still like the IV and III's though.

The New Mark V is SICK!!!!!!!!!!!! Love this thing. Every channel has so many great tones. I have been playing one every chance I get. I played it through a Rectifier vertical 212 with Celestion V30s and it was massive. I would like to try it through the same cab with K100s. I don't get caught up in the matching cab thing so I bet the MKV would sound just as good through my Bogner 212 cab! My 20th Anniversary Shiva with EL34s is the best amp I have ever owned, but the MkV will be right up there when I get it.
