Don't you just love it?

So you're criticizing 3 year olds because they can't write songs?

I mean, I get it I mostly can't listen to it either because of the lack of 'song'. It's not music I listen to for musical pleasure. But I guess I'm just impressed by the gymnastics of it. The ballet can come later (and it usually won't).

IMO, the vast majority of people can't write great songs. It's a rare gift.

No, I'm criticizing the people who shit their pants over it, as if it's actual music.

And it's not just three year old Asian super shredders, it's almost all YouTubers.

Their music is always the same homogenized, banal, lowest common denominator horseshit.

Have you heard fluffs band? Stevie T's? Of course you haven't, because theyre dogshit.

What about Jared Dines? Rob Chapman?

All of their music is completely insipid shit.

But god damn, they can make a "studio" look "professional" in 1080p, and they can shill your delay pedal like no one's business - and Did you know Raid™ Shadow Legends© has a free promotion right now? For a limited time only, you can get a FREE Hero™!

The internet "democratized" music alright; and democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner.

I agree with all of that but I guess I just see it as people trying to make something or just pay bills.

And fwiw, I could make a pretty long list of guys I'm a bag fan of but they didn't really write great songs either. Eric Johnson, Yngwie, and Steve Morse come to mind. I love those guys but not for their songs.

Eric Johnson? Really. “Tones/ Ah Via Musicom” are both GREAT albums.
If you don’t appreciate his singing, I get it, but some great Melodies and playing on both those IMO.

I love Ah Via but only a few songs from Tones and Venus. EJ has been at it a very long time and I probably wouldn't use all my fingers to count all the great songs he's written. I could do that on EVH first two records (or the first two Elton John records).

I feel bad because it sounds like I'm slagging EJ and I'm a big fan...but more of his playing and tones than his writing.

I don't want to diminish the playing abilities of some of these youtube guitar heroes, but I agree with most of the comments here. It's great they can pick up a guitar and shred like no one's business. They can easily play circles around me in that regard.

But as @rottingcorpse alluded to, can they handle the real playing experience? Screw the internet validation. I'll take the memories I have of playing shit clubs with half the band playing like ass and giving zero fucks, but still making it work and having a blast doing it any day. Drop these youtube virtuosos in the typical band scenario.... Drummer so drunk off their ass they can't keep a steady beat to save their life, singer forgets the lyrics, the rhythm guitarist decides to go on a 20 minute Hetfield style down-picking tirade and the bass player with such little clue they're playing a different song entirely. Let's see how the youtubers handle that. Truly talented players players just roll with that shit, make it work, and have fun doing it

I literally don't care about any of these YouTube players

They can't write music, even compared to me roflmao

OOOHHH BOY SOME JAPANESE 3 YEAR OLD CAN SHRED

Who cares. They can't write songs ?

Writing music that touches people takes experiences to draw from, and Chinese toddlers don't have those.

Yes, this is true. They learn to copy everyone out there. Some master the techniques of others by playing 12 hours a day.

But, writing a bad ass song, or even a riff seems to be beyond the reach of most of the new technical shred monkeys. I have seen guys out there that ABSOLUTELY BLAZE!

Even the guys who are writing, or trying to write their own style of instrumental shred, it’s not something that sounds good to me. I give them props for leaving the land of the YouTube cover artist, but I am still not a fan.

Even the revered boys of polyphia, I am not a fan. They have put in the practice hours and have become virtuosos on their instruments. They all have signature models of guitars, pedals, programs, etc.

I love bands like the mighty Led Zeppelin, Janes Addiction (everything up until Ritual is EPIC), Smashing Pumpkins until Siamese Dream, Van Halen until 1984, and they all have the same things in common.

-they are all LORDS of the BAD ASS RIFF, can open up the workshop of shred as viciously as anyone, but never do

-they NEVER OVER PLAY, they write solos to serve the song, in many cases their solos are a masterpiece of a mini song within a song (Janes - 3 Days, VH - so many, Page - Stairway) not cram as many notes as possible in a solo to show off their notes per second ratio.

-they have catchy choruses that sell albums, yet are still super bad ass, showing the world of rock that it can be done

-sadly, this is a concept that seems to have been lost over the years. Yes, I understand that these guys want to evolve and progress to making something their own. Yet, VH, Janes and Pumpkins made something uniquely their own and still made music that was soooo bad ass, rocked brutally hard, and sounded amazingly epic.

-hopefully the torch will be handed off to a new rock or hard rock band that can keep the torch burning for the foreseeable future?

Agreed, Eric Johnson has written some great music. Also, killer tone on some stuff also.

ive been the talented dude in a few bands that went through all the exact situations you describe, maybe for some playing like shit and looking and sounding like assholes is a good time but for me it was incredibly embarrassing. hopefully with his "fake" validation he finds a real band or gets signed to people who will put him with the right people.
