Dorm amp?! Gotta downsize!

First, let me say I usually cannot stand most Line 6 stuff. Everytime I heard one live in a band setting they always sound so thin, EXCEPT for the Vetta. I am going to get SLAYED for this but you should look into the Line 6 Flextone III combo. It uses the Vetta amp models. They stopped making it a few years ago but it sounds amazing at low volumes and you can get one for about $200-$300. I am a tube guy all the way but could never find a low volume tone with one. Also, you won't have to take up a lot of room on your small dorm room floor with pedals. Here is a clip of my band, recorded with just the Flextone.

Never played a Snott Watt, but judging from the clips it seems to be in a league of it's own as far as the "lunchbox" style low watters go. It just sounds huge! The Blackstar is cool but IMO doesn't sound nearly as good.

What about a laptop and some software? That way you can easily lay down ideas and you don't have to sell off pieces of your rig if it ever comes to that.

This was done with Amplitube 3. Pretty versatile, and it's as quiet as you want it to be. ;)

I personally never play out of my full rig when I'm at home.

That tune slays BTW. What kind of guitar/tuning? Very similar to the stuff I'm writing.

Keep what you have. I had a Marshall 4x12 and Artist 3202 head in my dorm room my freshman year at Penn State :D

This....

Feature wise I think the Blackstar wins though. Clean channel, drive channel, efx loop. Shaping eq. Might be more of a mesa sound? The clips I have heard of the snot sounded good, but geared towards one style. How much is the snott watt anyway?

That pretty much proves that if you know how to mix, you can use just about anything and get great results. Nice track Jordon!

Thanks man! Listen to my tracks from 2 years ago :bash:

ENGL Gigmaster?
i played one and it kicked ass, the best low-wattage amp I've ever used for heavier stuff

If you like the Dual Rec enough, maybe get a Mesa 20/20 Poweramp and a 1x12? Run the Mesa's pre into the 20/20 at home.

What kind of music are you playing? If I could do it over again, I would get something like the snax and a power amp or something...if you arent gonna be playing with people (which I assume you will be haha), then amplitube is the way to go. Even a small tube amp in the 15-30 watt range is gonna be loud as balls for a dorm room. I had a fender frontman 15, and I STILL got in trouble with that shit lol.

why not just get an attenuator for your amp and just build yourself a 1x12 cabinet?

It's just bulky to lug around, and i'd never wanna go anywhere without it if i only have one amp when i move. With a smaller amp i can keep it in the dorm if i'm not there and still have my mesa to play. Plus i'm afraid it'd get stolen, especially as a freshman lol

i'm in an indie/hardcore band right now, but when i move out that probably wont stick cause the band'll be too far away. I do alot of metal on my own too. Plus, i like the idea of having a bluesy jam band when i go, so i need something pretty versatile haha

Sounds JUST like me, which is why I'm wanting to move on from my Mesa Rectifier as well.

I suggest the Mak 4 Pre-amp

Go "Lunchbox" -- some of them may exceed the price range, but:

VOX Night Train $499
Egnater Tweaker 15 $399
ENGL Gigmaster 15 $749 (I'd save up and get this one)
Blackstar HT-5 $329
Jet City JCA20H $333
Jet City PicoValve $299.97 (Also a great recommend)
Mesa TransAtlantic $899
Ibanez TSA15H Tube Screamer 15W $299

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

thanks man!! i've always been fascinated with Engl amps, but there isnt a dealer within like 12 hours of where I live (NW Ohio). I like that blackstar amp quite a bit just by looking online, and i played a Mesa transatlantic in the local store and loved it. I was also looking at the orange tiny terror, that one channel little guy. Do you have an opinion on that one?

Someone just posted clips of the ENGL Gigmaster a few minutes ago

Sure, whatever pre-amp you like. It comes down to what tube type you like, what wattage you want, if you want depth/presence controls, multiple channels, ect..

I like the Randall RT2/50 because it can take a multitude of Power Amp Tubes, and is 2 channels switchable via MIDI, so you could use any of the 4 channels of the Mak 4 with 2 different types of tubes at any time. Very cool

Other notable choices would be VHT/Fryette, Mesa, Marshall.
