I had the chance to talk to DA during a recent guitar purchase. He bought my '58 Blacktop and played it on TMS the same day it arrived. Anyway, I asked him about his rig and he said he hasn't changed in years. He still uses his Suhr modded JMP's and the rocket fuel. He sent me a rocket fuel as well(because he's extremely cool!!!) It's an awesome OD/boost. I'm a fanboy. :emofag: :grim:

That's awesome man! BTW i heard that '58 Blacktop when they played Wembley Arena in London last month... I swear that was the best sounding guitar he used that night!

That just gave me goosebumps!!! I will get a chance to see DA next month. Looking fwd to seeing him do the Hornet justice live!

Yeah I think his Golub "lead" modded JMP is his favorite..but he runs that with the Suhr modded JMP as well. I had a Golub lead modded 800 here for a little while..It's right up there with the Aldrich I have and Dan Gower Cali modded superbass I sold not to long ago..you can't go wrong with any of those! Doug will be playing Rock Fest here in Wi in a month..can't wait to see both Reb and Doug tear it up.

A Furman PQ-3 can turn the tamest stock Marshall into a freaking beast. A good mod in a Marshall can turn the amp into a freaking beast. As someone who used the Furman and stock Marshalls for years, I can not imagine running both. Throwing an additional overdrive pedal in the chain too? Seems crazy.

Whatever rig he is using to record the recent Whitesnake albums should be confiscated from him and locked away in a closet, that is unless he is forming a 70's garage/doom/stoner band.

Agreed. He's an awesome player for sure. But his tone on that album did nothing for me at all. Actually, that whole album did nothing for me. I guess I was expecting something a little closer to Sykes era Whitesnake after reading the reviews here and elsewhere. Not even close...

Doug flat-out kicks ass. His tone fits his style to a T. Lot'sa front-end gain but totally expressive.... LOVE his stuff!! \m/\m/

I'm thinking he plays with a light touch with all that gain. I also that think quite a few of his licks wouldn't sound as good without the gain. a super distortion, jcm800 and a modest little bump from a boost is about as much gain as I've ever needed.

I miss his Lion tone, Burning Rain, and even Dio....

He plays heavy handed and uses nowhere near the gain that everyone would think! Sets the amp crunchy and boosts it with a pedal for solos.

Anyone tried his pickups? I am thinking of replacing my Dirty fingers with some of Doug's signature

So he's got all that gain on tap and sets the amp to crunch? What's the point of the mod then? Not arguing , just generally interested. Obviously the pups go a long way in getting the sustain but I'd think he's the type of player that would use his rocket fuel pedal with a JMP and still sound like he's playing on the modded Marshalls.

It's all about the voicing on his amps. I talked to him about them at NAMM for a bit and he was very cool. Getting the tone is all about dialing in the master volume and then setting the gain and the lead tone especially in a larger venue. I've had one of those modded heads here and I wouldn't want to play rhythm on it because it was voiced for leads IMO. It's still the sum of all of his gear and his feel and technique.

Brian

I'm curious how hot those Suhr pickups he uses are compared to a regular PAF.... I remember seeing the DunlopTV interview where he says "it's sortof like a really hyped-up PAF"... Hmm....

Is he using a different head for lead and rhythm? My experience is that if I find a voicing that works for rhythm, it also works for lead. I also find that if my rhythm tone has enough gain for rhythm, it has enough gain for leads. Some guys like that super soaked saturation for leads and it's fun, but you lose all that muted articulation stuff if you go too liquidy.

What do you mean you wouldn't want to play rhythm on Doug's amp? Seriously, I'm asking.

His tone up until and including Live In The Still Of The Night DVD was killer, everything after that is way to fuzzy, bottom heavy and gained out IMO. I wonder what changed? I know one thing is that Doug became one of the producers, obviously he must prefer it like that. And now that they're tuned down a whole step his tone has turned to mud

Sadly i have to agree. I much prefer his tone on the first two burning rain cds. Those tones are some of my favs of all time. A lot of strats on those albums. Way more percussive with clarity and that string seperation. But who knows, your taste changes your ears change etc. Still my 4th fav of all time

It's those Aldrich pups! tight, edgy, somewhat fizzy when i listen to the live stuff. Beach gets a smoother tone to my ear. I still appreciate what Doug is bringing though. I think i too preferred his strat tones.
