From the sound of it from some people, i would be a bit hesitant about dealing with CAE?? no? some cats got screwed from the sounds of it

Business is usually conducted through
an Authorized Amp Dealer, not CAA Direct.
So, I wouldn't think that would be an issue at all.

Or wait for a PT-100 or OD100SE+ to pop up in
the classifieds on here or other Forums.

the Surreal amps sound like the ticket! gonna contact the guy asap. thanks.
You wouldn't regret it. Jerry is a great guy to do business with too![/quote

Plus one on Jerry and his work!

AKA all the way!

Vintage/scream switch takes you from plexi to 800, pull Jose's for modded 800 heaven.
Clean channel is Vox based, beautiful, full, chimey, has its own dedicated tone stack toO...
Jerrys motto is make it one of a kind, so you can tell him to put a blackface fender clean channel in there and he'll make it happen. Def call him....

I often describe my 50 watt aka as my dream amp, he's out every thing I've ever wanted in there...

Seems like the obvious answer in my opinion. However there are some fantastic choices, many of which have been mentioned already.

Anything Friedman or Suhr will not disappoint! I've owned a Friedman Naked and Brown Eye. I've also owned a Suhr PT-100, ODSE, ODSE+. All are fantastic amps. So in short-there are a lot of fine choices out there. Just depends on which flavor you prefer.

come get em while the prices are still insanely low. Its only a matter of time before some guido threatens to break my legs if I dont raise the price up to the average.

Definately a good point. I also love my VHT and Soldano for their merits, and no doubt friedman makes monsters daily!

i was thinking about buying a Kemper or Axe-fx and realized that i really only use 3-4 different tones....ever. so why not get a head that will cover those needs?

i hope someone already has built my dream amp and someone can just point me there.

what i would like:

1) good chimey fender clean. think dream theater images and words cd clean sound.
2) old marshall jtm45 or other nice gritty jangly distortion. SRV without needing a distortion pedal.
3) nice brown high gain distortion (must clean up when guitar volume rolled back) EVH balance cd tone.
4) volume boost for brown channel.

if someone could kindly point me in the right direction, i would appreciate it.

Diezel Einstein with a cab loaded with greenbacks ( sealed rear loaded no ports).

I spoke with Jerry tonight (cool guy by the way) and i'm gonna ship my preamp to him for heavy modding. depending on how that turns out, i can decide if a need a head or just roll with the preamp/rack.

Nice

I had a Soho preamp Todd Langner modded for me years ago.. I haven't heard of Soho in years.. Langner's best was his DCP-1 preamp and ADA mods.

i also have a Soho qtr1 preamp that i'm thinking about shipping to Surreal to have modded. though it's a cool preamp for gain, the clean is just ok...not great, and i think that can be improved quite easily.

Friedman BE-100 with Full clean channel is the ticket for these tones.

On the cheap a Randall MTS is pretty much a great 3 channel option and with some pedals much more than ever needed.

Next up the scale I would say a Mako Mak4 is a 4 channel monster from the cleans right on up to the Brootalz.

For me the Bogner Ecstasy classic has given me all the tonal options I could need from a single head.

Two different companies....

CAE= Bob Bradshaw
CAA= John Suhr

I believe John kept the CAE name on the amps a while after they parted company, then went to CAA.

You have no worries dealing with CAA (Suhr)

FYI

EDIT:
Sorry about the double post guys. I am totally in love with my Herbert an I'll never get/purchase any other amp - the DP is just absolutely unacceptable. I will personally ground myself in my music room for the remainder of the day keeping Herbert at ease! :(

here is my first proposed list of changes:

1) change mid controls to a mid contour kinda like the fender machete: http://www.fender.com/products/mache...prodNo=2163000 blackstar does the same type of thing with their ISF control. seems like a simple option. Crate was doing that back in the 80's with their $200 amps. i think that one mod would solve many issues concerning choice of speakers.

2) maybe some switches for different voicing? the ability to get more chimey tones (vintage) or more modern tone would be cool.

3) the clean and crunch channels pretty much don't do anything for me...i'd love to go more fender/vox chimey clean with plexi/jtm45 crunch.

4) the lead channel would be nice if it could clean up when the volume is rolled back. again, maybe a vintage/modern switch would be a nice option.

5) the hot channel smokes. i don't know what else we could do with it, but i'm sure you we can come up with a switchable option. not sure if i would really need this channel to clean up well. creamy lead tone is about all i would use it for. too much clean up also means more pick noise, not sure about that one.

anything else i should try adding?

You may only use 3-4 tones BUT.....I think you shouldn't kick the kemper of Axe out of the picture. Besides, you already have a digital setup so integrating one of those should be easy and cost less. Coming from another 11Rack owner....you wont be disappointed. The 11Rack is awesome but the Kemper and Axe are on another level. There aren't any tones you wont find there.

I don't know if Mesa's fallen out of favor around here, but the Mark V can do all those things. Some of them particularly well.

could i maybe just find a good clean amp and get a pedal to cover the rest? Wample Pinnacle or Suhr riot come to mind, but i haven't tried either.

i am currently using an eleven rack with full range speaker cabinet and though it's nice....it ain't the real deal.
There are a lot of choices out there.

Personally I'd recommend one of the following:
1) Surreal Atomica (AKA 100): My personal favorite amp. Really great cleans and absolutely phenomenal low-high gain. I recently have been trying to coax a high-gain sound out of it (a la Metallica to modern metal) and have had some great results with a 10-band EQ in the loop, slight scoop of the mids, boost of the lows, and a slight boost of the highs. I also have a decent sized pedalboard running in front of it for use with the clean channel. Seriously, with a couple guitars there isn't a tone I can't get with this amp.
2) Marshall JVM410: Very versatile, relatively inexpensive, can't really go wrong with this choice.
3) Diezel VH4: Crazy versatile. Channel 3 has my favorite high gain sound. Channel one has a very usable clean channel which can be utilized by some pedals for other tones. Channel 2 can coax a great Marshall tone.

Either way, I would recommend using a pedalboard as well as a versatile amp. Some amps take pedals better than others though. I personally am not satisfied with getting my overdrive from pedals minus lower gain stuff. I've tried a Suhr Riot, Carl Martin Plexitone, among others. While they are passable and most definitely usable I just don't ever seem satisfied. That's why I have fallen in love with my Surreal. I can get all the overdrive tones I want (low/mid/high/modern/etc) and like I said, with the EQ in the loop-DAYUM, I was so surprised with the high-modern metal tones I am able to achieve.

And I agree with Audioholic, it is tough to get a lot of versatility out of the same cab but I am getting awesome results through my scumback cab (m75s). Just took some serious dialing for some of the tones (high-modern metal in particular).

CH2 on the VH4 is my favorite just because of its versatility. It's my favorite lead channel on the amp, and can do a kickass hard rock rhythm as well with a touch of a boost.
