DSL vs 5153 - great comparison vid

Leads are definitely a little better on the marshall, but that just sounds like how the amps are dialed to me. No doubt you can get the 5153 to sound like that for the leads. Rhythms, 5153 wins it for me in every way.

I think thhat DSL fucking rips... holy shit. The same things I didn't like about my stock EVH are what I hear here: cloudiness, nasal edge, and stuffiness.

Me want DSL
Woah I thought I was the only one who could hear that? Too much 5153 love round here.

I have both. It is in how they are Eq'd. You can crank 5153 gain on ch 1 and get open crunch goodness, or dial gain back on ch 2. And who does not use a boost? I like an OCD with either amp.

I don't have a dog in this fight, so completely unbiased. There is about a nickels worth of difference in the two after you tweak the tone and use your fav boost. The 5153 goes darker and the DSL has a little warmer cleans.

They both are cheap for all you get. Both cover all kinds of ground. Neither one crushes the other. I have had friends come over and play both. And just about all leave thinking they are 90% similar.

The DSL is so cheap, for the value for the dollar, it is the winner for the player on a tight budget. I am still amazed at how great it sounds for 600$. A little scuffed but what the fuck. It will get scuffed the first time I slide it in the back of the truck. Got it for a beater but it has main rig tone.

I thought that the DSL sounded better in this application, but that is only because the song was more 80's sounding riffs. I also think that he dialed in the 5153 to sound more Marshally.

I think that if he recorded something a little more modern sounding and dialed in the 5153 to that sound and then recorded the two tracks side by side, the 5153 would sound better.

Great playing though.

I own both amps. I like the 5150III more for my application.

For every video where the DSL sounds better you can find one where the 5150III sounds better.

This holds true when comparing many high gain amps.

(Don't forget James Lugo's very controlled and high quality high-gain amp shootout a few years ago. Go there for the most accurate comparisons. It's bookmarked on my homepage and use it for comparisons frequently)

I think that we are splitting hairs here. The bottom line for me is that had this not have been a comparison thread, I would have liked either amp in this application. I think both amps a great at what they do and it's up to the user to pick one that works for their playing style and for type of tone that they are looking for.

As far as the differences that I'm hearing, the EVH sounds like there is an EQ in front of the amp. It has a bit of that notched sound that I always hear with in the voicing of the EVH. The DSL has the Marshall/EL34's upper mid bark.

The DSL has been helped with a boost IMHO. I could be wrong, but since the studio I sometimes practice in has 5 or 6 DSL's, I'm pretty familiar with them and they can be made to sound KILLER IMHO.

I think the DSL's get a bad wrap because of the reliability issues that they tend to have because of the Construction. They most definitely have ISSUES ,but I've heard many a band get KILLER sounds out of them and of course some bands make them sound like ass... :D

I'm really interested to hear what the NEW DSL re-issues are going to sound like. Hopefully they have addressed all of the construction issues and the addition of the digital reverb and new tweaks has my curiosity peaked!

I finally got around to checking this out. I've not owned either of these but I've played both. I guess I've always liked the 5153 more both in tone and flexibility. When I listen to this I don't feel like the 5153 was dialed in as good as it could have been.....but those making the claim that the DSL has a better upper mid Marshall thing going - I guess I can't argue with that. So yeah....maybe it is the application.

Great video regardless

IMO, you can try all the tubes you want, the 5150 III doesn't have the signature Marshall high-mids. Both together would sound great cause each occupies a different tonal area, but if I had to choose, the Marshall.
And that's a good thing. That's what I hate about Marshalls ;)

This is my big question, I've NEVER heard a stock, straight in DSL sound like the one in this clip.

If either, or both of these amps were boosted, then the comparison means nothing to me.

It's like saying which girl is more of a natural beauty, the slathering them both, or one of them with makeup.
