Here's another good one I think:

The Marshall sounds better in that clip, but I'd bet a tad more gain and presence on the EVH would would make it sound about the same.

I Think the couple vids show you can dial in some common ground. And that's the DSL is a under rated amp.

The differences are in the extremes, IMO. The DSL in the cleans and 5153 in the heavies on CH3.

Get both, 2 2x12 cabs, a good used guitar for the price of one booteek amp. Dunnski...

I think both sounds great, but I really dig the 5153. Agreed that those DSL's are a great value and I certainly want one. haha

If your EVH has the JJECC83s preamp tubes thats were the dullness is coming from.

Man, I had to go back and listen to it again after all the guys saying the Marshall sounds better. I am a huge Marshall freak and I thought the 5150 III destroyed the DSL. The Marshall sounds congested and choked and thin and fizzy and the 5150 III sounds big and has better clarity and seems to stand out better in the mix. I am listening on studio monitors in my studio here and am thouroughly unimpressed with the DSL in the first recording. Especially the rhythm in the beginning. That is a "sell that amp" difference to me right there in comparing the first riffs.

word

What's a recommended replacement for them?
I have a very early EVH 100w. They came with a combination of electroharmonix and Sovtek 12ax7's. Power tubes were also Sovteks. I think this combination sounds better than the JJ's. The JJ's seem more edgy and fizzy. I only think this because I played a few JJ equiped EVH's in the store through the EVH cab. I play mine through a Mesa 4x12 so that may play a part as well.

Although the JJ ECC83S is very high gain, I find EH & Tungol to be much more bright and "fizzy".

I use JJ pre's to tame treble freq's and fizzy gain.

That was a great video and THE way to do a comparison. The marshall sounded more "marshall" but I wouldn't say one is better than the other. I'm partial to evh since I have one but they both sound good. I will say this, I struck up a friendship with a major producer last year when selling some drums and he invited me to his studio. He has a room full of vintage marshalls, fenders, boutique amps, modern amps you name it. The one amp he has used on every record since he got is the 5150 III...

Wow--I found the exact opposite. Sounded like the Marshall was cutting through, but when switched to the EVH, it was like it was stepping backwards in the mix. Wish I would have kept my DSL, but that's why I have Splawns :D

I think thhat DSL fucking rips... holy shit. The same things I didn't like about my stock EVH are what I hear here: cloudiness, nasal edge, and stuffiness.

Me want DSL

I like the DSL a bit more in the video but in person I like the feel of the III more.

I agree, I agree and I agree.

I just saw that this clip came from the Black Tora guitar player. I really like what that guy is doing. Yes, I am a hair band riffer.

IMO, you can try all the tubes you want, the 5150 III doesn't have the signature Marshall high-mids. Both together would sound great cause each occupies a different tonal area, but if I had to choose, the Marshall.

Woah I thought I was the only one who could hear that? Too much 5153 love round here.
