Hey guys, been drinking tonight and got the urge to post some video footage of my dual recto with KT77's. :cheers2: Not the most exciting amp compared to what some of you guys have, and I didn't know what to play...but it sounds a bit different than most of the rectos since I changed to 77's, which is what I wanted to portray.
Go easy on me, I was drinking all night before and during the MNF game (hence my slurred speech!)
Signal path is crappy no name LP copy w/evolution in bridge-->bb+pre-->dual recto-->carbon copy in loop-->Recto 212
playing starts around 0:45

Wow, it was that good huh?...   Did i forget to mention it's Cameron modded? (jk)

Yeah does sound cool with the 77's but man so much low end. It's thick!

I know, the low end is a little woofy on this beast. Especially with the macbook mic picking it up.
I should buy a Zoom Q3 camera and dial back a bit more bass. Believe it or not, the bass is already set pretty low!

Sucks that when I finally post a video of my shit, one of Dave's Cameron/Marshalls is posted right after :D God, I wish I could send him an amp. Or find better clips of DF's Marsha

Hard to tell from the recording but it seems like you have a good fundamental heavy tone going there...the midrange character definitely sounds different than what I'm used to hearing from a Dual Rec...nice!

What did you have in there before and what are the differences you noted?

I have 6L6's in my Roadster, and would not mind trying something different.

Yeah, the KT77's bring out the mids a little more and make them a bit more useable. I run them in EL34 mode to get the bias up where it should be, unlike the stock 6l6's which are very cold per Mesa's fixed bias.

It definitely sounds good in the room, but not so much on the recording.

I had the stock 6L6's which to me sounded terrible unless the amp was cranked over half way up. With these KT77's it sounds decent at bedroom levels and amazing at loud volume! It also sounds muffled in the video because I was too lazy to move the box that's directly in front of my 212 cab   :aww:
Go to eurotubes.com and read up on the different tube combinations you can put in the rectos. EL34's or KT77's really open up these beasts!

Were you at low volumes ? I think I can hear some string noise in the recording. I run old 6CA7 in my Tremoverb most of the time. But I have JJ KT77 in there right now that I got from Bob.

Yeah, pretty low volume. Louder than "bedroom" level though. The reason my string noise came through is because I was standing just to the right of my laptop. I didn't want my drunk ass in my undeez to be right in front of the camera for ya'll to see :D
This is the info from the website for the JJ kit I usually use:

'Description: If you're after that EL34 type tone but want to retain more of the low end like your 6L6's have then the KT77's may be your tube! The KT77's have even a bit more low end extension than the E34L's and they have a nice sizzle in the top end that is not brittle. The clean tone is very fat and full and the crunch has more of a chunk to it. This kit has a matched quad of the KT77's, four standard ECC83S's and one balanced ECC83S for the phase inverter in V5. The KT77's can also be used with the GZ34 rectifier tubes if you like the tube rectifier tone but want tighter sound.'

I use the 77's to get the bias up where it belongs and to get closer to the EL34 sound, but they let me retain a nice, somewhat round clean sound.
I also use the GZ34 rectifier tubes instead of the stock 5U4's. The GZ's give the tightness and response of the silicon diode mode, but while running in tube rectification mode. It sounds less sterile to my ears than the silicon diodes. I'll probably change to EL34's next time. That sounds pretty good too.

Sounds great actually....I think that junk in front of the speaker is blocking the beamy high end of the speakers and helping the camera mic actually...without all you'll get is stiff high end...well that's what happens to me anyway.

You may be right. I'll try making a new vid soon without shit blocking the speakers to see if it sounds better or worse. I really want to try those tone bras that dave was talking about. I've been meaning to order a couple for months now
Also, I only run the gain at about 12:00 or a sometimes just a bit higher and the rest is from a boost. I find that a lot of that recto harshness is introduced into the sound when the gain hits 1:30-2:00. Gets muddy above that also.

Thanks ...... I thought the sound and playing was not too bad myself. :)

I have one of those pin hole mic on my lab top. It picks up everything no matter were it is in the room.

I liek the sound and the playing. Of course it`s a little muffled, but you can get a general idea of what it sounds like :)
