So blacks get tornados and whites get floods
I distinctly remember hurricane Katrina and footage of people sitting on their houses, mostly black. Prepare for a hurricane? Who got time for that?

I lived about 30 mins from New Orleans in the early 90s. The area was very very prone to flooding. A storm was enough to flood my neighborhood.

Generally the less premium, more flood prone areas of town, the areas of town with fewer green spaces, and areas in proximity to heavy industry, are the minority areas. There is definitely some level of historical injustice with regard to that.

And many just couldn't afford to get out. How many of those rooftop dwellers didn't even have a car, let alone cash for an extended stay away from home? I feel bad now for that post of mine.

Places like Memphis and St. Louis are prone to flooding in all the river valleys. All of New Orleans is prone to flooding, particularly from a hurricane. Historically towns were established near rivers for obvious reasons.

Sidebar, bet you didn't know that Katrina didn't actually slam direct into New Orleans, it centered on Gulfport

I don't believe the French quarter flooded because it's higher than the rest of the city. Makes sense that it's the oldest section, they understood the risks at the time.

Not sure if I was aware of that about Katrina but I was aware that Gulfport got completely trashed as I've shopped homes in Gulfport and Biloxi area. Both of them got torn up.
