I dunno how he does it. I dont really wanna get into it, either, but I do want something different than what I have. Its hard to decide what to go with...
Well I threw in the JB from my other guitar into my H-III, though not a night and day difference I definitely like it in there much more than the C5. I find it has more upper mids than the C5 wasn't quite getting out, and I'm getting more chunk and grind now. I believe some older ESP Horizons came with JBs installed so not sure why they chose the C5. I think a hotter pup is the way to go in this case so I'm guessing the Hella will be an improvement for your H-III as well.

I'm guessing it will be, but I actually really do like the custom in it. I have never played a guitar with a JB that I liked.

Cool, looking forward to your review. Yeah BKPs are more than I'd want to spend too just to try something I'm not sure about. I've read some winders including BKP scatter winds (some of) their pups and offset the windings slightly in each coil, supposed to make for a richer sound I believe. Does BG do that by default or is it something you'd have to ask for? I almost don't want to get into replacing pups because it's just such a rabbit hole of potential guesswork, so many flavors to choose from.

Offset winds are very common among all pickup makers...

I've read that the JB is largely a love it or hate it type pup, though with my guitar/amp/ears, it's working out so far. The C5 might sound better to me in another axe, I'll throw in in the maple capped mahogany floating trem guitar the JB came from and see what happens.

Are you detuned from standard E?

I usually play in Drop C. But even in standard, I didnt like the JB. I havent played a JB in about 5-6 years. They just sound really weak to me. I also much prefer ceramic magnets over alnico.
