but seriously i have been thinking about getting an ultra lately and offing everything else.
Careful. I bought mine for effects only and it's wickedly good at so much more!! I'm still not sure why I'm having a hard time saying 'screw the big rigs', maybe it's just imbedded into me that I need hooge-toobs to get my sound and power. Maybe this is a form of evolutionary resistance. Maybe it's a sign I'm too old. Maybe... Well, whatever the reason is that I'm holding onto my big rigs, it's certainly not because the Ultra isn't as good or better than what they're capable of.

There, I said it.

I keep both types of rigs around (and love them) but I could easily live with just the Axe. Easily.
I am completely amazed by this piece of techno wizardry. And I bought it with the staunch belief that "NO WAY" would this "thing" take over my amps... No way!! I'll just use it as an effects module... How very, very wrong I was. Ya ya, I'm keeping my rigs, especially my latest love the Mak4/Fryette/Fryette rig - thing's bloody amazing. But jaaaaayzeus!! How the HELL did they DO this with the Axe?!?!? And it goes f'n DEEP man!! I mean - mics, transformers, sag... WTF!?!?!?!

Hooked

Run that Ultra through your 20th Xtc effect return, PCM70 Brown face Patch. Amazing with the 20th X :D I run into the effect loop return of the 20th and Mesa MK III combo for a stereo blend. A little 1x12 open flavor blended with the 20th Bogner 4x12 v30 cab.

I really like how Dweezil runs the Wedge cabs up on end. Ive been thinking about getting 2 Active wedges and doing the same thing.

Just got to listen to this again threw the cans at home. Sounded great!

Guess I'm going to be the asshole, I thought the guitar sounded like shit... the guy has some chops but that's about it, but the sound it self was pretty awful. I'd get lost on that pedal board haha... thing is as big as me and I'm one tall ass guy.

I'll have to experiement some more with the Ultra for sure... I've run it through the poweramp I have, and have used it as an fx module on the Mak4, but haven't experimented with running into the loops of either the Deizel or the Bogner yet. No time.

So these Atomic Wedge's, they're the final stage in the signal path for the Axe-FX to do exactly what it's supposed to do, correct?? Which is the full on cab sims, the full on poweramp blocks, etc? I dunno, I bought it to use for effects, not as an entirely new rig... However, I'm not averse to 'change' or 'evolution'...it's just a huge mindf*ck for me to consider having 1's and 0's replace a place I've been for, oh, 25+ years...

As to Dallas' comment, I didn't really comment on the tone of Dweezil's playing overall as hey, it's a Leno show stage, and perhaps not the best venue to critique his playing or sounds. I thought his approach to the noodling/soloing was a bit over-the-top in the context of the song itself, but on its own, super impressive. I mean shit, some of the phrasing was whack - but in a good way, not many players would have ventured into that area in the space given in the song.

Just my 2 cents,
Mo

Hey V,

Wasn't trying to knock your opinion in anyway, what he's doing is cool man, and I'm not a person to judge what another likes to begin with, theres a billion forms of musical expression and we all connect to them differently! If you dig it awesome, it's a killer song. Cool recording too, just never been a fan of the axe in any way.

Aw dude, NO sweat, see - the problem with typing on a forum...one can't convey tone of a post. I wouldn't mind if ya slagged my opinion to high hell, shit, that's what open commincations is all about   I said it before, opinions and assholes, everyone's got one. So no biggy man, even if ya did knock my opine - you're entitled to it, and shit, if that alone ruffles my feathers :poke: I best be seeking some therapy and self-help courses :D

ANYWAY!!!! I've heard Dweezil play better, I've heard Dweezil SOUND better, but overall, I can't help but pander the cat due to the fact I think he is an ultimate master of the guitar in his own special way... AND I am a MEGA fan of his dad and his dads musical works. Makes me happy to see a big slice of Frank up there everytime Dweezil's doing his thang, know what I mean??

Whatever, I posted the vid cuz I thought it was cool... And I think most of us here will agree, it was cool

Peace,
Mojo

Cool..... but slow the fuck down. The song doesn't need all the wanking. Keep it killer classic chops Dwezil!

+1 I found that lead playing totally said nothing at all, sounds like warmup exercises, except that when EVH was warming up on Beat it, it was the final take

Sound: thin and processed (esp. the wah)
Playing: Boring and unmelodic
Stage Presence: Looks like a church player rather than a hardrock axeman

Sorry to diss it ...

Im curious and want to get the Atomic active wedges to check out the difference. I had a problem with the 1s and 0s a couple years ago and fought the whole Axe-fx thing. After owning it and hearing it I can live with what I have and feel better about the money going into savings and not gear gas, and by "live with" I do not mean I feel I am compromising in any way, but am getting more out of less gear.

I could have more effect pedals and racks and miles of cabling, amp heads, switchers, batteries, power supplies, pre amp/power amp kind/issues all messing/coloring my tone and when a problem popped up lots of frustration tracing down a bad cable, fuse/tube or something just unplugged. For me I prefer the Axe when weighing in on all of that.

cool clip, I love the Vai flair Dweezil brings to the tune. The Fractal sounds killer too

@jlbaxe...

Seems to me you and I are going to be in the same boat. I'm keeping my 20thA XTC and matching cab; EL34 model; white tolex. That thing is just too good to let go, and every time I fire it up? Heavenly.

But as for thinning out the herd, ya man, I'm kinda seeing a different side to my wants and needs since having this Ultra. Never would have imagined it, but the thing really does sate every want and need I have, plus 100% more. It's cool having big rigs in da hizzy (studio, session space, etc), the pound and the feel; but my gigging days are practically done. It's all just music making nowadays, and that's exactly where the Axe is a hit.

I'm going to research some Atomic Wedges, get a sense as to what's going on there... I guess this is the start of a WHOLE new direction I wouldn't have even considered a reality not 2 weeks ago. We'll see.

Mo/V.

Think I've said this in another thread, but MAN...Dweezil sure seems to have his head on straight. Seems to be living the dream, yet not abusing it. His playing was TIGHT!

Agreed.....classic song, missed the original licks! The one time he went to the neck pickup, in the second verse was really nice...sweet tone. IMO.

Is it just me or did Leno completely blow off Dweezil at the end? I know it's Alice's performance, but damn....that was Dweezil Zappa on stage as well. Just a thought.
