Kapo after you have played a great variaced plexi then you easily believe that what you are hearing is a variaced Plexi/Superlead with Ed playing it, plenty of YT vids showing 67-70 Marshalls cranking out that amount of gain all day long. At any tme Ed could have used and EQ to shape the amp which we know he did from the pics and any other type of device to shape the tone but the base was Marshall plexi/superlead IMHO.

Just listen to anything Al Estrada demos...

fair point and I know when Al slaves it into another amp or power amp it really comes alive as well which I still don't rule out.

Def. need that EQ to tighten it up so that almost has to be a must i'd think. Who cares though awesome! I want one of these but might just be cheaper to buy a variac and see if it blows up my Bugera 1960

Hate to say it, but a lot of it is probably garbage and/or repeats itself. They also said it would take years to go through all that so don't expect it any time soon. Also I think they mentioned that had it been that good, it already would have been released on an album.

Wolf basically already confirmed that he will be going through it all, but that it wouldn't be happening any time soon

if that was his main marshall it sure had plenty of gain!
what a rat hole that studio is, you can smell the krell, beer and cigs from here!
sammy sucked all the fire and balls out of that band is all i can say
dave walked out and 'love walked in"
I prefer Sammy era

the Amersterdam record was cut on the Soldano(s)?

could listen to Ed riff/noodle/play live all day
Once he got around to putting this on a record ten years later we´re probably on to the 5150s.

We're a small club. :(
Definitely. Some good material in that era but the tone isn't as raw and the songwriting and lyrics sure as hell aren't as raw. It's a different sound though. But i think when people think VH, they think of DLR in chaps and crazy licks.

I could be totally wrong but I think Balance was *mostly* 5150s

I think most of the signature Balance tone comes from the stereo micropitch shifting stuff

I prefer Ed's writing though the Sammy years. FUCK is my all time favorite VH album. My guess is that in 50 years we will still be debating on what he actually played gearwise. lol

I can appreciate the honing of his skills, both writing and performing. His playing became much more polished.

But, it was the raw, non perfect DLR era. Live, was not a mirror of the albums. That was shear magic for me.

Yikes! You really think that album is better than Fair Warning? Or VH1? Or Women and Children? Or DD or VH2? Really?

Not better, just more my cup of tea.
Just never got into Roth.
1984 would be my #1 w/Roth.

Anyone know the story (if there is one) as to why the Drop Dead Legs solo fades out so quickly????

I love both era's of VH. But Eddie's creativity was at its best in Dave era. He wrote great songs with Sammy and was creative but in a more commercial kind of way. Like poundcake drill effect and integrating piano etc.
Stuff like the intro to mean streets and eruption was not geared strictly to sell records in my opinion. It was geared to melt your face off.

I enjoy the Van Hagar era equally but I believe Ed was at the top of his creativity pre-5150 for raw guitar and amp tone.

It doesn't take anything away from the creativity he exhibited 5150 onward, it was just focused in a a different way. I believe he was just bored with his tone and was looking to change it and he definitely did...

I would say balance and FUCK are my favorites but pre 1984 riffs, solos, and song structures just continue to impress me even after all these years.....

The rhythm outro riff Ed plays is fucking killer. I love it. Just groovy and funky…people that have never played an instrument just can’t appreciate how tight those three were when they started grooving.

That's why I wonder why they didn't groove on it for at least another 15-30 seconds more.
As soon as they really lock in it starts to fade, and pretty quickly.

Eddie was really in Holdsworth land too, which I wanted to hear more of.
