Let me know if you've heard this one before. I have not.

Hands down the best interview of Eddie Van Halen that I've ever heard. Just like a regular dude. Really shows how humble he was. This was in 1995 after Balance came out and he was 7 months sober as he says. Sadly, his darker days were ahead of him but he sounds so innocent and youthful. Really enjoyed.

Interview was with NY Pure Rock Q104

Cool interview. Weird that Kip Winger would make up that story. Didn't know he was into coke so young (the '72 PCP thing would make him about 17).

#1. Kip Winger has no business even making up shit like that regarding the VH II sessions.
B. Eddie said he thought the incident with the PCP in '72 was Cocaine and so he did a shit ton of it.
III. At 17-18 he was already gigging the Sunset Strip I believe or at least in the backyard party scene.
d. He is from the Netherlands so...
5. His dad had him and his brother at a young age drink a little vodka and smoke a cig to help relax them before a performance.

So cool to hear him talk about how happy he was with sobriety at 7 months in (1995). Too bad he couldn't hold onto that. Think of the additional music/decent tours he might have been able to crank out. I was happy to catch him in 2007 and again in 2011 as a sober Eddie on stage. Really amazing to see him kill it on stage.

I have avascular necrosis in both hips as well. First thing the doc asked me was "do you drink a lot?"

Thanks for posting this - great listen. There are not a lot of interviews where EVH talked about his personal stuff, but he was very forthcoming here. Lots of little details I had never heard. He does seem like a regular guy, no rock star persona at all.

From the sound of it, this interview was sometime in early 1995. It is wild to think about what had happened after that, with DLR. Sees Dave in NYC, shakes his hand and says hello. Then he says Dave's not coming back, it's like a divorce.

But around 15 months later, we get Me Wise Magic and Cant' Get This Stuff No More, with Sam out.

And Eddie's playing was lights out during that stretch, too.
