Ok, I am looking at loading up a 4x12 and was interested in the Lynchback. I don't care that they only come in 8ohms as I personally like the sound of a cab wired at 8ohms.

Please reply with pro's and con's and also if you suggest 4 Lynchbacks in a 4x12 or 2 mixed with other speakers such as V30's.

Thanks!

Got a pair in a 2x12 that I've been gigging a lot with a SLO. They're deep on the low end, mids are kinda flat (not scooped or pronounced) and crunchy, and the top end is rounded/dark-ish. I like them a lot with this amp, and I think they are best suited for amps on the brighter side. They walk a very fine line between vintage and modern. I guess the best way I can elaborate on that is they can get crunchy yet still be smooth and deep at the same time. I don't think they'd be the best match with darker amps. They sound fantastic with my Soldano. Much better than the V30's I was using before, and I love V30's.

Anything besides aV30 would sound good with an SLO.

I picked one up to try in a ported 112 and fresh out of the box (not broken it in yet and I'm not playing very loud on it) I find it to be darker than a V30 or greenback. It doesn't have the top end sizzle or excessive mid honk and the lows are tight. I may try a quad in a Mesa traditional cab sometime this year.

Oh and thefyn was trying to sell off a quad of newer Lynchbacks in the classifieds. I think they might still be available.

EDIT: Yep - viewtopic.php?f=6&t=185317

I found the mids on them to be "weird" lol....Seriously though I might be the odd man out on this but when I had Lynchbacks I compared them to V30s and Greenbacks . I would agree that it's a dark / smooth speaker with tight bass but for me the midrange just wasn't right . There is a scoop and a bump in places I didn't like.

Which amp?
Did you prefer the Greenbacks?

I agree with the weird mids. :D The mids kinda stick out like a sore thumb in a mix. Not in a bad way really but in a two guitar band I was really out front more than I care to be. Made me self conscious.

Honestly didn't care much for these speakers until I put a pair in an X pattern with some Celestion NEO Creambacks. This combination is really awesome. YMMV

I hear mixed bags...they are dark, they have more top end sizzle, it's confusing. Kinda sounds like most don't know quite how to describe them cuz these speakers change characteristics fast. Saw an interview with with Bill Landry on the EVH discussion, and he said they changed almost daily, and now he has to crank the presence.

But I've read other guys who have track with them and say they couldn't tell them apart from the g12m creamback...so hard to say.

I recently had a mid 90's 8 ohm v30 from Mesa. Put it in my EVH combo to try out, so 1 v30, 1 greenback, It was okay. Tighter, yes, and I did have to roll the mids down a little more, but it also lost it's mojo. I really am happy with 2 8 ohm greenbacks in series. I like that tone a lot. Every other damn celestion I play doesn't seem for me.

They're not the optimum speaker for a SLO, I'll give you that, but they don't sound bad with it either.

No one in this thread said they have more top end sizzle. Are you referencing something you heard or read somewhere else? I agree as well that the mids are different. I wasn't sure as I was typing that that I was being accurate about describing the mids. Sometimes I think they sound scooped, and then other times I don't because I'm cutting through the mix pretty well. They do seem to mate well with my Soldano. I'd like to try some Creambacks with it and even some EVs (although the extra weight of those speakers is kinda off-putting). All that said, I prefer 25w Greenbacks the most so far with that particular amp.

Sounds like a exact description of the Lynch Emenince Super V speakers.
Got two 4x12's loaded with them. I freaking love em!
Makes every amp sound deep and lush.

-according to CELESTION there a V-30/GREENBACK mix-

-of course being only available in 8 ohms factors into the equation as well, there louder & it makes the sweet spot higher in the volume department as well.

-call me crazy but I prefer 8 ohm speaker's for the above mentioned reason's, it's the only reason I have the two 16 ohm BLACKBACK's for sale.

When I tried the Lynchbox cab with those, they were very similar to my G12 65 cab. Almost identical. Nice tone.

So that was your experience when you tried the SLO? With V30s?

Just wondering.

The Lynchback can tame a bright amp. It's really, really good. It has all the great qualities you want in a speaker like a real nice low end, thick but kind of balanced mids, warmth, articulation... but the top end is a bit dark for my tastes. However, having said that, I regret letting the one I had go because it really allows you to dial in more cut without getting harsh. You can't do that with a V30. My concern was that it was too dark, but in retrospect, it was a fantastic speaker.

Negative on this. I've run my SLO through numerous types of speakers. It actually sounds great through V30's. The best so far has been V30/GB mix in a 412 but straight V30's are good to go.

I think at some point someone posted that Mike Soldano doesn't like V30's. Now it's become an Urban Legend.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone, Good info...but I am also confused if I would like them.

I like my Lynchback but it really takes totally resetting your amps tone and gain controls. Easy enough and it sounds really good.
