Why would a young, up and coming rock band, recording their first album have NEW gear? That would be expensive to them?
Eddie experimented with pickups, guitars that he built himself, and amps that came cheap to him.
No chance in hell he or the band bought NEW Marshall cabs to record. VHI was recorded in 77? Blackbacks came out in what, 76? Late 75?
Old beat up gear. 60s gear. Like JBLs. Cabs with the tolex torn off.
Just like in the pics.

from a practical point, slant because they’re playing live in the room and if you slip a can off one ear slightly while tracking you can hear your room sound easier with the speakers tilted at your head.

It looks like the top left corner of the handle might be chipped off. This would indicate plastic handles. I wouldn't expect metal to chip like that.

Well... there is a slant cab in that particular photo taken on that particular day. Didn't they record tracks for 3 weeks - plus 10-12 days of mixing? Is there a chance that Ted or Don or even Ed himself swapped the slant cab for a straight cab on a different day having discovered that the tone was preferred? Just wondering out loud here...

Agree a metal handle cab wouldn't chip at the corner, but what we "see" here may very well be something else like the reflexion of the metal screw..
and there is another slant cab on the left you can't see on that cropped version, facing Ed & Alex.

I think plastic handles phased-in as early as late '71 from what I've seen (based on multiple cabs with Q3'71 dated original speakers); already checkerboard cloth by this time, but still no plastic corners.
