EMG S/SA pickups, any good?

I didn't like the S or SA for distorted lead playing. They sounded alright for clean stuff, but they would never be my first choices for single coils.

I want a neck pickup for cleans, really articulate clean passages for my own stuff and jazz. Couldn't hurt to have a good chunky thick blues tone, like a beefed up strat.
Get the SA.

How would you say they compared to an EMG 81 or 85? I'm running mine at 18v which improves the cleans alot.

You could have some fun with that guitar. Dual SA pups, add the EXG & SPC controls and you got it covered in spades.

Yeah I was thinking about adding an afterburner circuit or something. It's a great guitar for what I payed, £150. it plays so smoothly and has pretty low action and a thicker neck than alot of newer guitars.

I think I'll do something like the guy from Helmet does and put a spring in the single coil route or something for the middle, I doubt I'd find much use for a middle pickup to be honest. unless I were buying a radically different sounding pickup to put there.

SA at the neck, S in the middle. Forget the Afterburner, get the EXG & SPC. Trust me, I have the DG20 setup in a Strat and it's great,
