Engl or Mesa

So check it. Been kind of debating. I kind of want to try a Powerball or Savage. Should I trade my Roadster for one or should I not haha. I also have a Gibson Classic Custom I would possibly work out a deal with. But I dont know. What do you dudes think?
 
I did a side-by-side comparison of a Road King II and a Savage 120 through a Bogner 4x12 the other day.

Cleans: Mesa won out on this one, honestly. Just fat and full of life.

Dirty: A draw, IMHO. The Mesa has a slight edge here with the tube-switching, I think.

Balls-out-rhythm: Engl wins here. The Mesa still has that weird high fizz that you cannot get rid of without bringing the gain waaaaayy down. I'm sure different tubes would remedy this, but the Savage just had it in spades.

Leads: A bit of a draw here, as well. Just depends on your tastes.

It's kind of easy to get the Savage to sound a bit transistor-y, but you can dial this out.

I plan on heading back this week to compare the Savage and the Powerball side-by-side.
 
I think I am gonna go against trading my roadster for one bc I love this amp way too much. I think I would much rather work out a trade with my Gibson Custom Classic for anyone interested haha. But yeah I am definantly gassing for an Engl right now.

I really want to love the RK II. The cleans are so nice. Maybe I'll buy one and see what different tubes can do, and if I dont like it, I'll just flip it for the Engl.
 
Savage 120 > Powerball :thumbsup: i've played through Powerballs a few times, and never been particularly impressed. the first time i got to spend some time with a Savage 120, i was blown away. bought one about 5 months later, have had it for over a year now, and even though my VHT Deliverance is better suited to the main band i'm playing in, the Savage isn't going anywhere for a looooong time :rock:

I was leaning more towards a Savage actually and thanks for boosting my gas for one ever more.
 
I had a Roadster..own a Fireball and a Laboga Mr. Hector now. If you're playing live keep the Roadster...the only reason I went ENGL was for home jamming the sound is damn killer...if I was in another band (I've been in 15 bands..I've hung it up now)....I would always choose any recto for live jamming period. Nothing in my opinion sits in the pocket like a Recto...
 
Im picking up my powerball on the 22nd, so I say go for an ENGL. You really cant go wrong. Mesas are okay, but you have much more variety with a Powerball or Savage.
 
^hes probably right honestly. Im assuming, but Im not sure, but you seem like youre not going to be playing balls out death metal? because if thats the case, the Blackmore will suit you very very well. Its an incredible amp, just doesnt have as much gain as a Powerball.
 
I like the Blackmore a lot more than both the Savage 120 and the Powerball. The Savage 120 sounds like a half-assed version of the Blackmore to me and I just don't care for the Powerball's voicing whatsoever.

But in all seriousness, a used Einstein is in the $2000 dollar range, which is about what a Savage 120 costs new and not much more than some Mesas.

Yeah I dig the Einsteins pretty good, but I definantly like the VH-4 the most.

Can't help you there, those go for over 3 used.
