Hey guys. I decided to buy an ESP EC 1000 and I've found a mint condition(used) model from 2009 but for only $300 more I can get the same make and model but brand new and 2017. I've been looking unsuccessfully to compare the two to see if there are any significant changes since. Does anyone have any input that could be useful? Thanks.

Other than finish changes, they should be the same Korean made guitar.

I would compare the exact models on the archives https://www.espguitars.com/pages/product-archive.

Depends on the exact model though. The differences I notice in general are that in 2009 they had Earvana Compensated nut and in 2017 they do not say what the nut is. I am quite sure it is not as good.

The only other difference is in 2009 they used ESP locking tuners and in 2017 they have LTD locking tuners.

I had to edit this because at first I did not see a 1000 Model LTD for 2009. The reason why is because it is an LTD Deluxe which is said to be better quality then regular LTD. Some people say it is up there with E-ii quality or at minimum in between LTD 1000 and ESP Standard.

With that said if there was a situation of the same exact model from 2009 vs 2017 I would consider two things.

If your model has Ebony boards, older models will have a better board. Ebony these days is becoming scarce and unless you are getting a Custom Shop or USA model you will not be getting a completely slick and dark black board like you would get in 2009 from an LTD or Standard.

The other thing I would consider is if you are dealing with rosewood or maple or something else. It is debatable but I am on the side of the fence that says the pre E-ii models could have a little more mojo. Not trying to reignite that shit storm but that is just how I feel about the topic.

Anyway check the catalog.

If it were me and the 2009 condition was very good or even mint I would absolutely get the 2009. I would expect slightly better quality being an older model plus the fact it is a Deluxe model. Also better nut and tuners.
