I think I've narrowed down my newt guitar purchase to these two. The ESP Eclipse FT will cost me nearly double the Edwards LP. Which one would you get? Which do you think is gonna take me closer to a "true" Gibson LP sound? Is the ESP that much better?

If you want that Gibson sound, why not just get a Gibson? If they're too expensive, buy used.

I forgot to add that I can get the ESP from a local online shop, with full warranty and 30 day return policy. I would have to order the Edwards and have it sent from Japan through the usual channels.

I can get the Eclipse for a bit less than the price of a Gibson LP standard traditional, and I have heard bad things about Gibsons in general. I tried a couple at a shop and didn't think they were worth the price.

Edwards FTW

Seriously I like mine as well as any Gibson LP Custom I have ever played.

Everyone has been raving about the Traditionals, and you can find them used for ~$1500.

I played a nice one for a long time at the shop. In fact I liked it quite a lot, I think Gibson has improved ther QC. But I have a hard time spending so much money for what you get. What actually made me decide against it was the shop's guitar tech advice. He has played guitar for something like 40 years, repaired and set up guitars for at least 30, and owned what he calls a Real Gibson for many years. When no one else was listening, he told me it was a good guitar, but didn't sound like what good LPs sounded in the past.

I don't know, if I found a really good deal maybe I'd hit it.

I've been playiing Gibsons since the 60's, and quite frankly, they're not very good guitars..reissues, standards, specials...very mediocre build quality and construction...Check out the Schecter Solo 6 Classic...or the Schecter Tempest Classic.......Far better instruments than what Gibson builds, but their cost new is $850!!! Incredible necks, Duncan pickups, flame tops, mahogany bodies.....amazing!!!

Wow, i don't know where to begin with this thread.  I played one of those Schecters and it felt like a toy. I've got a 57 Reissue Goldtop LP that's an incredible guitar. Good luck chasing that tone with the knock off's.

pah! felt like a toy stuff again. there are better suited words, you know: different, not what I think the guitar should be like, etc ... a toy?! cmon!

ESP Eclipse full thickness is a player friendly step from a Les Paul, Les Paul it is not. It has a thinner neck & different frets, which are IMO great. That said it's going to sound different, not only due to the changes I've mentioned, but also because of the finish & because the wood that ESP uses is different. Take mahogany body from 3 different makes & they will sound so different that you'll be amazed.

If you want that Gibson sound, why not just get a Gibson? If they're too expensive, buy used.

Word!

The thing is, does Gibson use the same neck, the same frets, finish, wood as they used in their golden years? Maybe a Heritage is gonna get close, but I cannot find one where I live. And a VOS or better is out of my price range.

Is a 2009 Gibson traditional gonna give me a better LP sound than a cheaper ESP/ or a much cheaper Edwards? That is the question.

They all sound like Les Pauls, none of them sound like stratocasters or whatever & they all sound different. Different is the key word here, there is no better or worse. For me personally the Edwards 98LTC series sounded closer to 70's customs than anything else. That said I doubt that 98LTC will play as well as the Eclipse, you may get lucky & get one that plays better, but generally ESP standard series play better than Edwards series in my experience.
