Torn on a Gibson LP

There are a bunch of them that come with medium jumbo’s, not huge but not really tiny either. If you look at sweetwaters site they usually list fret size if it’s not the standard stuff. A bunch of them that come with Grover’s have med jumbos. If it’s a model that’s trying to be all old school it will have the tiny ones. I don’t care for those either

They claim medium jumbos... but I have a 94 SG Standard here that has been leveled at least a few times and the frets are bigger than on the ones I grab off the wall at my local shop... so YMMV.

Yeah, 60’s , 50’s they both have the same frets. Struggling to see how Gibson thinks they’re a good choice going out the door. You could barely play aggressively, sitting at home but the second you’re on a stage, moving and getting sweaty too, you’ll be screwed.

I’d look for a 90s Classic, or even a 2000s. Especially the flamed maple premium plus tops. I have a transparent amber one that’s killer.

What a difference lighting makes. I called the store and asked for a cell pick off the floor as they do some pro grade lighting on the web pics. This is the same guitar.

I don’t like the necks on those classics. A nice top is always gonna be fun, but how the guitar feels will always be more important.

As always with Gibsons; Try before You buy. I’ve seen so many shit quality Gibsons and returned a few due to poor finishing after buying them unseen and I won’t do it anymore. When finding a good Gibson, buy it immediately, they’re magical.

Actually, no. I just prefer it to the 60’s neck but the Classics from the 90’s had even thinner necks that were also a little flat in the middle. Shame because I always dug the all gold one from ‘91.
My favorite LP standard necks are from when they just had one size, which was usually inbetween the two they offer now.

Your second paragraph there is kind of dangerous, I don’t recall when they ever had one size, even back in the Norlin years. They were all over the place. Maybe in the Henry years before the Classics ? And now after ?

Yeah, I’m talking 90’s up through 2014 and 2016 (not into 2015). Not sure exactly when they started doing 50’s and 60’s.

So, been giving serious thought to a new LP standard and dig the double troubles. Curious what you guys think about the back on this one. I wouldn’t be able to play it before buying. Top is amazing, which is what grabbed me but I’m not feeling the look of the wood of the body. Thinking about resonance and all that. Wish I could play it in person to dispel any concerns. Do you think excessive grains and potential knots matter at all?

I always thought it would be cool to be able to afford to fly to a known store that has the crazy big selection and spend the day finding one but a wistful thought is all that is.
