EV EVM12L Vintage vs Black Label Zakk Wylde

I like EVM12L Black Labels but they are darker than most 12Ls. Good for TL806s/thiele cabs. I think I would have liked the BL as much or more than the old 12L but not with the same amp EQ.

SM57s are shit. I don't know why we use them.

I like the Eminence Karnivore over both.

I think the black label was made with zakk’s own private Marshall in mind which tells me it’s bright as hell and he’s using a custom speaker made for him to tame it. At least IMO.

I believe Zakk's signature speaker is just a reissue of the 300w EVM12L Pro-Line.

Zakk's main Marshalls are all stock 2203s, except with 6550s. I believe the switch to 6550s and EV speakers came around the same time in the late 90s.

His signature chain is weird. Uber tone-sucky Monster cables into tone-sucky wah and rotovibe. His OD has all knobs on ten. His amps are generally dialed with bass and gain maxed, presence and treble around 6, middle at 5 and master at 3 or 4. I find his amp settings to be quite muddy without the OD, but with the OD at full blast it balances out. He says he dials in his gear by putting everything at max and taking away anything that's too much.

This sums pretty much my thoughts also. You forgot about his chorus pedal which is also very tone-sucky.

What do you use instead?
If we talking are talking dynamic mics most frequently M88 (TG)s or M201s. And e906s live - partially for sound and partially for the form factor. Occasionally other things like M421s, M441s, M160s or Re20s for specific purposes where I want more or less hype or a ribbon roll-off or less/no proximity effect.

High-SPL dynamics are part of the game now too - you can put an AT 40 series on the grille cloth without it clipping if you want. Playing with polar patterns there can give you both interesting reflections off the wall and different proximity effects.
