Ever get sentimentally attached to a piece of gear?

Today I am selling a piece of gear that is very special to me. I am selling my peavey rock master preamp to buy a new 4x12 cab. This preamp is sentimental because I bought it and found out it used to be my dads, and it has been special to me, but I can always find more of them. I just want to sell it because It is redundant to have when I have the same amp (Peavey Ultra plus) and I want a mew 4x12 for my rack :D

Do any of you get sentimentally attached to gear and never want to sell, then "Have" to sell it?

Usually. I buy musical equipment with the intention to keep it until death.

i have a usa dime razorback prototype, one of the first 7 prototypes made, was supposed to go to dime. the program and build were started just before he died, and finished before NAMM a month later. it is in my jam room, about a mile from his house. i will never let it go, and never play it.

i have a kerry king marshall he borrowed to play the dime tribute at ozzfest. he signed it "for martin" and dated it for the ozzfest gig. got pictures of him playing it and signing it at vince's house the day before during the rehearsals. i would never let it go, and barely ever bust it out to play it.

if i had a guitar or amp that used to belong to my father, i would dump everything i own, including the stuff listed above to either acquire it or keep it.

that being said, there are times when sentimentality mean nothing. if your family is hungry and you are about to be evicted, and your holding onto a 2 carat emerald because your great grandma brought it over from europe, it's time to let something besides your pride go.

yeah I guess the 91 PRS I bought years ago will stick around and I wouldnt want to sell it in large part due to sentimental value

Yes. I have a 2007 Ibanez RG20051 black and white swirl (100 made in the world) that I bought in Maui on our honeymoon. I wasn't going to buy it (being it was our honeymoon and all. I probably shouldn't have been thinking, much less looking for gear anyway) but the wife is the one who urged me to. I could lose everything but I won't sell that guitar. It helps that it plays better than all my other Ibby's as well.

The ones I bought from my friends who have passed away.

ie: Bogner XTC and cab

a bunch of Studio gear Mics, Pres etc.

yup, i sold my les paul hated myself for about a year and then bought it back off the dude.

I still have the guitar I played my high school-era gigs with. It's a partscaster/Superstrat with an ORIGINAL original Floyd Rose (i.e. no fine tuners). It's got crappy Dimarzio pickups and it's a hideous color. I never play it, but I also won't sell it.

I woodshedded on that thing for many hours on end, and it was the guitar I played when I still thought I might "make it" as a rock star.

Your question is like salt in the wound. woke up today, the sun was shining, birds singing, and then I remembered this thread from yesterday:

Yes. Mentioned this in a thread I made yesterday. My 1976 yairi alvarez acoustic. Was my dads before i found it under is bed and kinda stole it   . First guitar I ever had. Will never sell it. Will sell anything and everything else before that if I ever get into a bad enough bind.

some days i think everything i have, can be replaced. gear and guitars are tools, not toys to me.

and other days, i vow to never sell any of my toys!

me too! except amps and pedals but ya never know, guitars no way!

It was a Fender Iron Maiden Strat. However, someone offered a price I couldn't refuse. ;) I think that was the first time I ever made money off of gear.

Yup, my first GMW strat.

Not going into the mush behind the guitar but it will not be sold.

This... I dont have it anymore
I cannot speak of it.
that is all....
