Evh 50 watt question

The head is 50 watts. I see they sell a 1x12 cab but it is only 30 watts. If ohms matched properly is it still safe to run with a watt mismatch? Seems odd to me

You can run a 100 watt amp head into a 25 watt speaker if you want to... just don't turn it up too much. Same goes for the 50 watt into 30 watt speaker... you don't want to crank the amp up, but it's perfectly fine otherwise. I often run a 2x12 60 watt cab (GH30's) with my 100 watter, at gig volumes too, no issues.

I wonder the same why not use a 60 watter for the 1x12?/

Eddie seems a little weird about his speakers and cabs... I recall from the original 5150 combo the whole spec that the combo is exactly half the 4x12 and 120 watt head. So 2x12 and 60 watts. However, even then much was made of the fact that the speaker section was supposedly exactly half the volume/size of the 4x12.

The same is what they're doing here... the 2x12 (60 watts) being exactly half, supposedly volume/size as well, then 1x12 being exactly half of the 2x12 again... I see the logic.. not sure if I agree on whether it's ideal or not, but it's his company so...

It's important to note that it is all based on speaker sensitivity and normal output.

The 50 watt amp is not putting out 50 watts all the time. With everything CRANKED it may get close, but generally speaking any tube amp is running at about 50% capacity and sometimes less. That is why the 100 watt Boogie combos can get away with a single speaker for example.

No, a cranked tube amp for example a Marshall Super Lead 1959 puts more than 100 watt out when cranked.

You can use the 1x12 as long as you don't crank the amp too high. At bedroom volumes you can do it all day long. Even at gig volumes you will probably be completely fine, unless you are doing a really big gig.

Also, not sure how much the EVH 1x12 is or whether you are wanting to match or not, but you might want to check out the Whitebox cabs. You might be able to get a higher wattage speaker in a 1x12 or even get a 2x12 cheaper than the EVH branded cab.

Yeah, Jim from Scumback was telling me a 100 watt head like a plexi is putting out over 140 watts and even at moderate volume levels could possibly damage a low-wattage speaker. Howard Kaplan from EVH also said over on TGP that he wouldn't recommend running the 50 watt at full blast through the single 12" cab. Just saying...

Yeah it is a must read for sure. I was really surprised to see how hands on the guy is. He definitely has a lot of patience
