EVH comes clean......

For some reason I can't read this interview. It's not making any sense to me. It's not coherent.

Something seems fishy about this all. WHo knows if he wasn't lying when he supposedly "Came clean" in this interview. We'll most likely never really know how he got that sound. He could make up so many lies, and lots of people would believe him.

I saw Van Halen in Pittsburgh this year and Eddie sounds like Eddie no matter what he plays thru. His solo sounded like the same one I've heard since the late 70's and he was using his EVH-III amps. He just has that certain "thing" where you know it is him.

True, he sounds great through those as well. His effects play a big part in his tone as well.

EVH lied about his gear? I'm gonna call BS on this one. Ed's been on the up and up from the getgo. He's been telling the truth since he was seven. Check your facts.

By the way, he may be clean now but there was a period there where he wasn't even brushing his teeth or changing his shoes.

I saw him this year. I dug his playing and he played well.

The drama around VH and the gear mystery make make him see like a sausage...

Sammy Hagar is a guest host on TMS tonight and will interview Mike Anthony.

Should be interesting...

He came clean on this a long time ago, no?

There seems to be no mystery. He plays a sig guitar in a sig amp and has a handful of off the shelf effects.

And skill

So here we go........starting from Ground zero...
What did EDDIE really use?? Inquiring minds wanna know...and copy...and argue about for YEARS! :hys: \:D/ :hys:

Meh...

I would rather listen to some Alice in Chains and dig an awesome tone. The wankery is good, but the power chords and riff in Man in The Box or Rooster is better.

There's no secret.

Its almost all in his right hand. Weirdest technique I've ever seen but thats the deal. Everything on amp on 10, variac on 90.

You will never get his tone just out of an amp. You gotta cop his right hand technique.

A stock '68 on "10" and variac comes close but I still think he boosted the front end. His tone on VH1 is too articulate...even with his hands.

Just go and rip out one of your light dimmers and go wild with your Hagen.

I never really understood the EVH tone chasing... would not be at all surprised if it really was that simple.

It was all in his right hand and a simple amp setup.

One of his fingers on his right hand is locked and won't bend, and it adds to his sound by the way he braces it against the strings.

As for his tone in the early days, all I hear is a loud Marshall with an eq pedal boosting the front end. Simple as that. You can here it plain as day.

Ed was my inspiration to start playing as a young 14 yr old... so his tone and playing have always been a source of fascination for me.

I'm tellin' ya, his right hand is VH1. He hits so damn hard but in a completely different way. You can hear that tone when he plays an electric not plugged in. Its really hard to describe his RH technique. Its very different than people think and I've never seen anyone comment on it.

As for the articulation, yes, he hits it THAT hard and drives the amp THAT much. The EQ pedal is not that much of a factor imo.

The secret to Ed is your not him. But he's not you either and thats why no matter what you play through you sound like yourself. I'd bet a lot of money no matter how hard he tried he can't sound like you. Best anyone can do is get in the ball park.

Ill tell you guys all the truth right now.

Since 84' he developed his tone with the axe fx Friedman patch.
