EVH comes clean......

Rockstah could sound like EVH thru a variety of amps. I think he was getting solid EVH sounds on 5 different rigs.

I was watching some of his YT vids over the last week or so. He was getting the EVH tone thru a little MG what the hell ever cheap SS amp they have. Looked like a 1 x 10 combo with a phaser up front.

Thinking the EVH magic is in some unknown gear ignores the fact it is 97% in talent.

Exactly, RS could cop it well and your point proves the obvious.

I've played through Ed's "infamous" marshall and although its a good sounding amp I sounded like me.Didn't sound anything like him but if I tried to mimic his technique I could bring that out a bit.

Its not even talent per say, its his uniqueness.

Although its fun and educational to go after other peoples sounds its kinda strange how most seem to want to be someone else instead of themselves. I think its cool to learn from other cats of course but this obsession is a little whacky. Guitar players are the worst for that. If I had any brains I'd become a therapist just for guitar players. Then I could afford all those cool Friedman amps! Humm .. maybe I'm on to something ...

Ha!

You say exactly what my guitar instructor says. I have been playing for almost 40 years, yeah, I'm old. But we never ever do another bans song in a lesson as the goal. It is always to play this track in a key with a certain mode, then change modes and hear the sonic feel.

I'm lucky since my fav players are style centric not gear. Gilmour and Knopfler.

Let's not forget that he used a metal pick to play. A pick that according to him, caused him to have the mouth/tongue cancer. But no, the smoking didn't have anything to do with it....lol

Not true! The only metal guitarist that used/uses a metal pick is Satriani. Check your facts, it's well known.

So I guess Eddie lied to me when we spoke. I'll tell him next time I talk to him, that he needs to update his bio for you..

Real quick, I've been in the entertainment field for over 25 years, and I've seen Eddie countless times. As a guitar player, you ask questions. One of my questions that I always ask him is, can I have a pick. Everytime I ask him, he goes into this long drawn out story, about how he only has 3 metal picks. One was given away to a friend, one is kept in a safe, and the other he uses.

Now, I don't know if this is indeed true, but this is what I was told several times by the man himself..

I have no need to make up this bullshit, as It's not my story to make up, but Ed's.. This is why I don't like posting on boards.

What facts do you have, things you read in a magazine?

Stick around. I like the cool personal info.

Thank you. I don't mean disrespect to anyone, but being behind the scenes sometimes, it's hard to tell stories. People don't often believe you. Again, I'm not saying Eddie isn't lying, cause honestly I think he's alittle "off" but I can only relay what I was told.

I will stick around, thank you for that vote of confidence!

Maybe Ed lied about the pick type to throw people off the trail as well?

j/k

That's exactly what I meant by off. I've always felt that he dances around questions, and comes up with these far fetched answers.

I did see the pick, it was slightly larger than a guitar pick. He took it out of his pocket, and kinda teased me with it, sorta like, nah nah look what I have and you cant have..lol

He still hasn't explained the extra hole in the back of that Marshall and the fact that he was working with Jose A on some amps, etc. Some say the extra hole was a Jose master.

If he is smart, he wil never give up his secrets to a guitar sound that literally changed the world.

I'm cool not knowing. It is a little like one of my old hobbies, golf. I volunteered for tournaments and did the walking scorer thing. I have at least a hundred autographs and got to walk down the fairways a dozen times.

I watched them play during tournaments, within 10 feet of them swinging, but knowing and seeing does not help me do it.

But friends seeing me on The Golf Channel and Sports Center was cool.

Well said and I agree!!!

Ed does not typically use a metal pick whether he has one in his pocket or not. He does like to mess with people though.

Just to keep this thread alive, the last time I meet Eddie in LA for a function, he was driving this bad boy around..

I remember watching Live without a Net and they were goofing around backstage and EVH opened a drawer in his riig and had hundreds of picks in it. They looked awful plastic to me but I have not watched that in years.

My guess is that he tells a story about metal picks so that people dont bug the shit out of him for free picks. Pretty hilarious way to get rid of people IMO.

Ill say this much.....he could give us all the metal picks he owns and he could even let you plug directly into his rig and you would not sound like him.

The magic in his sound to me is his rhythm playing. Its loose, relaxed and fun. He's a better rhythm play than lead player.....and he's arguably the best lead player that rock music will ever see.

EVH is mexican now? That thing looks like a pile of shit.

That was funny.. Eddie does collect cars, and I do think this is a "beater".lol

Never expected him to pull up with this one. Like a walking billboard in away..

If EVH used metal picks, they would say EVH on them and he would claim they were made of a special alloy he invented called eddieantium because his super sweat wore regular picks down in 2 seconds and charge $350 a pick on his website.

Why did Eddie park on the grass?
With as much dough as Ed has, why would he only have three picks? He could have a metric shitload made up for him. There's also no way that he uses a metal pick to do the tremolo picking that he does all the time. That's a medium pick. Probably nylon like his signature pick.
