I thought the video was cool. Gained out a bit though but hey, it's Ed :)

Very cool video and great to see Ed doing it. I borrowed an original 100 watt head for a little bit but I really didn't like it. Gain seemed too muffled and flubby, and 2nd channel was very flat. I think it's because I much prefer the higher mid crunch and bite of EL34s over 6L6s. For example, "Unchained" just doesn't sound right here, sounds so dark and compressed.
The 50 watt version sounded better to me when I tried it in a store, so I wonder if the Stealth is the same.

Honestly I can make my Stealth sound better for those tones than what's on that video.

I dont know....I love mine. Its a great amp. Nothing for me to bitch about.
His video was cool. But playing the amp in person....its awesome.
Well one guy said its a Friedman Brown eye amp inside the 5153 shell. :hys:
Man the controversy never ever ends.
Yeah...I'm still waiting for the proof on that statement!! Don't think its ever gonna show...damn.

I agree about EL34's, but if you listen to the actual Unchained, it IS dark and compressed, with a ton of gain. I think it's the highest gain tune of the DLR era. So, the 5153s sounds pretty close (to me anyway) in the demo.

Listening back to the original, you are right it's closer than I think.
I guess this guy in the video is not using the right Rig-talk approved historically correct EVH pickups

I dont know....he seems pretty happy with it?
Unless he was just acting?

Right, AND, he's not holding his pick right!

That tricky Bastard. He knows guys study his every move with gear. He only did this demo to throw people off. His real amp he plays is a secret. Keeps it locked under the stage when he plays.

The other thing to consider with this tone is that cabinet, those 20w speakers ( 80W total power handling ) are being crushed by that 120W head so there is some cone distortion ( the good kind ) going on and some series air being moved...

Actually, I have those EVH Celestions. They say 20 watts for vintage sake, but they are 25 watt Greenback Heritage models. Still getting pounded by a 120 watt amp though - definitely part of "the sound"!

Yeah the Heritage G-12Ms are also listed as 20 watts, but are indeed 25 watters. I wonder why they do that?

I keep reading specs that state it's 120 watts. But my Stealth which is a first run from the end of 2013 is 100 watts. And Howard Kaplan himself told me he doesn't know why they are saying it's 120 watts. It's 100 watts.

Tape on the bridge pickup. Explain

Keeps the high E string from getting caught on/under the pickup coil. This can happen if you raise the pickup too close to the strings and if you tend to pick or strum enthusiastically.

The amp is geared up for a lot of different players and styles and to sell to them, so whatever.

The interesting part is EVH's crazy thumb/first finger and thumb/second finger picking technique, and he's playing the same riff first with the thumb/first finger and then with the thumb/second finger for no apparent reason except for that's how he does it.

Yeah, very unorthodox pick holding! Explains why he never does any pinch harmonics though!
