Is channel 3 voiced the same? I play really dirty and truly never have issues with not having enough headroom, and I basically never take my mesa out of 50w mode, even at shows. Does it have reverb? What's the difference in the channel setup?

Never mind, got it. Three dif sets of tone controls and three presence knobs. Being that I never play clean, I'm not sure I need the 100w.

I would also go with the 100w version.

Channel 3 on the 100w is voiced exactly the same as the 50w.

Neither have reverb

The 100w has independant EQ and volume controls for ALL three channels. The 50w shares the EQ for channels 1 and 2. Also, there is a noticable volume jump on the 50w when switching between channels 1 and 2. Since they share the same volume knob you can't control this volume jump. However, the volume jump is much less noticable when the shared gain is about halfway or higher. The 100w has independent volume controls for each channel so this is a non issue.

The fx loop is great on both. I was always particularly impressed with the loop on the 100w. The loop is solid state on the 50w but tube on the 100w.

I think the 50w small head has a resonance control; the 100w full size head does not.
50w had MIDI capability too.

all true........

along with the addition of a quarter inch connector for the footswitch of othe 50w vs a 7-pin cable of the 100w. There were numerous issues with the 100w 7-pin cable.
50w has a headphone output the 100w does not.
100w has larger Schumacher transformers than the 50w.
Channel 1 on the 50w breaks up later with the gain knob
Channel 2 has more gain on the 50w than the 100w
Channel 3 on both are virtually identical
Both amps come w/ JJ's (although my early 100w came w/ Sovtek/EHx mix, which I like more)
Both amps were meant (and sound the best) when ran through a 16ohm cab

The previous was mentioned by Howard Kaplan when he was explaining the differences between the two amps over at TGP, not necessarily my opinion. However, I do find all of it to be true with my amps.

I use the RJM mini amp gizmo to make the 100w midi compatible.

Hm. Sounds like the 50 is my speed. I like that resonance control.

I rarely touch the resonance control. It sounds great at noon and I keep in there, even with other cabinets.

Is that a compliment or insult? Can't tell.

Yes it is I love Soo

Keep in mind the 100 watt is super heavy I think the 50 watt weighs 35 lbs

Yeah 50 sounds good. Gonna look funny on top of my oversized Mills cab tho :D

I've owned both, I prefer the 50 Watter. Channels 1/2 sound better to my ears, while Ch3 is identical.

Absolutely LOVE my 5150 III 50w! I also got bored last night and had some free time so I went to town with some extra CF vinyl I had laying around:

MIDI on the 50 is what sold me, really. Can't beat that in such a small package. And killer tone!!!
