What really matters is what we can learn about a humbucker in parallel or series. Has anyone tried this with high gain? Does any builder sell them already?

Tom Anderson. Series/parallel humbucker option always available on all their guitars with the “Switcharoo” switching system. It’s a very cool and useful tone.

It's interesting reading for sure but I thought the broken pickup thing was in the 1983-84/85 and 5150 where Eds pickup has the "broken coil". This guy is conflating two myths into VH1 lore alot like someone else we all know and love.
The stuff I remember reading was ED potted his own pickup almost melting the bobbins, that's it, I never heard of him rewinding his own pickups and that's where Seymour Duncan supposedly came in and "REWOUND" Ed's PAF sometime in late 1978/1979. And I would say Ed PROBABLY tried every pickup that pushed the amp harder other than a PAF and those were the MM1400/1300 and Dimarzio SD in 1977/78.
Now the timeline when Seymour Rewound Ed's pickup is kinda murky, but I feel Jim Gaustad has shown just about any PAF or PAFish along with the Dimarzio SD, MM1400/1300 can all do a respectable VH1.
It would be interesting to hear how a parallel humbucker sounds and see if it has the attributes he claims in his substack article....I'm open to listen to all theories and put them up against what we know works for that tone that have plenty of clips to prove it.

Haha I'm anti Jose but appreciate all the guys who use them in heavier tones. I really don't prefer them over all tube designs. Exhibition Ed and his experimental thing into heavy helped guitarists more than hurting them. In modern tones I wonder if a parallel tap might be the trick to get that squish that lead players need/want. Lead and rhythm feels differ and if you play a single channel amp and are into the less is more then maybe this works.

Well there's only one way to find out and that's to try it out.
Wouldn't two 7 ohm coils in parallel be half the resistance like 3.5ohms????

Maybe you’re barking up the wrong tree then as a humbucker in parallel mode is more direct, cleaner and leaner than the two coils in series. Of course you can squish up the tone further down the signal path but yeah, conventional series mode is more forgiving.
