Thought this was pretty cool and simply explained, and to mine untrained ears he nailed it.

We could go over this topic for years. And for years it has done exactly that.

It lacks the number one character that made his tone what it is - a marshall being a marshall. On the brink of destruction at that. He dimed the whole damn amp to 10. Was extremely picky with the pickup that he used unlike this guy. EQ's were involved - not just mimicing the studio recording process.

There is only one user here who IMHO got the absolute closest EVH tone i have ever known - bmf5150

Yeah, that sounds better. I SAID I had untrained ears! :D

I thought the first video was pretty informative, just one way to get close to the sound.

The vid is informative, seen it before. But as others have said, he nailed the characteristics but not the tone. You won't get that with their OD pedal. He should have cranked that Marshall.

Agree with this. I think the effects are very important for that sound either way:

Rockstah(Mark-RIP) clips are the closest period.

I agree!

BUT, a huge part of the early EVH sound depends on having the right reverb, right pickup,
E- flat tuning, and EVH chops. Otherwise you have a nice sounding Marshall!

EVH's tone has been one of the quintessential Rock tones in my mind, since '78.
