listening to Fabulous Disaster this morning, some brutal guitars on that recording. Anyone know the setup to wire in that sound? Sounds like JCM800 with some type of drive pedal and EQ. Anyone know specifically?

I believe Holt uses Engl amps.

Not on Fabulous Disaster as he was not using Engl amps then.

Exactly.

Yup, I'm huge Gary fan ( hence my login :) )

On Fabulous Disaster he used his Marshall JCM800, which wass moded by Lee Jackson I believe. And he used EMG pickups in that period (also on Impact) - he said that in interview.
What about current setup ? Kemper :) With his signature ESP of course. And with Slayer - new DSL's with Maxon OD9 for rhytm tracks and OD808 for leads.

Gary also has a unique muting style. He chokes up towards the neck a tad, which results in a slightly differing PM sound then when your palm is resting right against the bridge. Call me gay, whatever, but Gary Holt is my fucking hero. He's top 3 on my list. Mustaine and Scott Ian are my other two favorites. Less of Mustaine these days. Lately, I can't stand the guy and I think his riffs suck, even on the new record. Absolute shit.

Is that the same Lee Jackson mod that has 4 gain stages ? Or something unique for Holt

Langner modded JCM800. His favorite Marshall from his early years. Brent Gutierrez brought it back up to specs several years ago.

Dunno.

I know his preset in Kemper is based on this modded Marshall.

You're exactly right about his muting style. I'll do that on occasion and it's instant Exodus.

Yes. FD is stock JCM800 w/Boss Super Overdrive pedal. After FD, it got modded by Todd Langner & appeared on the next few albums.

Gary is a dude that when I watch him, even in interviews, he's a guy I wish was one of my friends. He's a super cool, down to earth guy. I'd almost pay just to hang out with him   I don't think I could hang out with Mustaine without getting in a fight with him and he use to me my #1 guitar hero.

But with Mustaine, you can pay to hang out with him. Now talk about fucking lame ha?

Anyhow, enough Mustaine talk.

Check this out if you haven't seen it. Awesome hour of Gary. Wish they did something with the frign sound though.

I totally agree, man. Gary does seem like an extremely cool dude, and Mustaine's douchebaggery is legendary. I haven't liked that MF'er since Peace Sells anyway. :D I also think Gary smokes Mustaine as a songwriter AND guitarist. Exodus have been on fire for years. I'm happy that Gary's the one to get the Slayer gig. I don't like the circumstances, but I'm glad it was him. He's definitely one one of the good ones.

He should be writing for Slayer and KK should sit the fuck down. Slayer - New album sucks IMO. Yeah, it's heavy, it's Slayer, but it's no Seasons of the Abyss or South of Heaven. Exodus, well, I need to give the newer shit a re-listen. I didn't hear anything new that overwhelmed me, but it's worlds better than the WalMart POP bullshit that Megadeth is writing and sounds like Exodus. If your a Megadeth fan and you want to lose all hope for them, go watch the Supercollider video. WTF?

thanks guys...is the Langner mod published anywhere?
I've seen it out there a few times, but my understanding was it was incorrect (by somebody who really knows that circuit)
Todd did different stuff for different people, if you find it, make sure its the 5 stage mod that you are hearing on the exodus album ;)
