I used the Boogie MKIV again at practice yesterday and it's just not quite the thing for me. (For my metal stuff I much prefer my 6505+),

I need that Marshall kerrang. Those fat mids. You know, the big classic Marshall sound. Biting highs.

I've had tons of Marshalls over the years. An 800 won't cut it because I need cleans and a loop. I loved my old JTM45 but I didn't like relying on gain pedals. I want Marshall gain.

With my pop rock band I don't need metal gain. I need big loud punchy, ballsy crunch. Good cleans. Great loop. I usually stay on one channel and roll the volume for most things clean, but for some songs I need real clean. So even with 4 channels I'll likely stay on two of them.

Thoughts about this amp? I'm sure the cleans are good, but I want to know if the gain has that classic 800 gain.

Thanks.

My personal opinion of the amp is a big meh. Descriptors such as noisy, fizzy and cheaply made come to mind. Mid gain crunch is it's best sound, but there are so many negatives, there are better out there IMO.

Short answer nope. When I had my Jvm the closest I could get it was orange/crunch and it still had a ton of gain. More than my 800 with a pedal, but it didn't have the punch or volume of the 800. My 2204 50 watt would bury my 100watt Jvm. I have contemplated putting a loop in my 800 for awhile for the same reasons you stated, but have resisted so far.

I had a JVM215C. I couldn't get a "classic" Marshall tone out of it, even with tube and speaker swaps.

I'd look into a DSL instead.

Yeah, the demo's had a ton of gain on all channels. Not really my thing. Even when I play metal I don't use nearly as much gain.
I had the reissue 800 with the loop and it was good. That was pretty classic.

Cleans weren't that great, but I really didn't spend time on the low input channel like I should have. I may want to revisit that amp.

I know the easy answer is Friedman but I'm really not interested in spending that kind of dough. I'd rather have an 800 with a loop.

I had a DSL100 way back and it was pretty good.
Not really enough character, IME.

Did you already pass on the Quick Rod idea Ronald?

I was not super fussed on the JVMs but if I had to get one it would be the 205h.

I had one. The gain channel was great. The cleans were so bad and unusable I got rid of it. There a supposed to be versions that have better cleans. Not sure.

had one....couldn't wait to get rid of it. i'm a mesa guy though....

You should look at a 2555X, really good loop and clean. Prices are down near a grand for a barely used one, and a JVM is thin city compared to a Jubilee. Takes boosts very well, has that 800 roar with the most usable eq of any Marshall made.

Laney VH100R, or a GH100L.

I owned a JVM205H, twice. The noise was the deal-breaker, both times. Stupid hissy.
The Mesa Stiletto Deuce is another great amp. Very underrated.

K

cool.

what specifically made the cleans unusable? Unusable compared to a JCM800 or unusable compared to a fender twin? I like the clean on my Qr because it is....well.....clean.

I think the Marshall JVM 410H is good but not great. It's the kind of amp you would have some fun for a few months or even a year and then find yourself wanting a better Marshall.

i've had my jvm410 for a few years now, and i really can't understand why i see so many people complain about it. but then i guess some people plug in and play something once or twice and if it doesn't sound great they decide they don't like it? lol.... i think it has some great classic marshall sounds in it on channel 1 and 2, and the overdrive channels are there if you want them. i think i can get pretty much anything in classic rock you can think of with it.

I agree. People don't give things time. I'm sure I could coax some killer tones out of it. I'd just be careful with the gain.
Part of the deal is I'm an old school 6-7 knob guy that used the volume knob for cleans for years. The MKIVb and JVM are so complicated and have so many features I don't use it's kinda silly.
I really just need that Phil X Friedman :D

By the way, I listened to the recordings from Friday's rehearsal and the Mesa sounded killer!

IMO on paper the JVM is a great amp. I wanted to love it so much that I bought the 410 head on three separate occasions. In total I've probably owned the amp for over a year. I finally gave up and swore to myself that I would never buy another one again. Hell, I've even thought about buying the JS version, but just can't do it. The amp was a complete bust for me.

I'm the same way actually lol... i really only play on channel 1 on my JVM anymore lol - i rarely even click over to channel 3 or 4. ALL of the gain knobs on this thing are under half way up lol... i have a 5751 lower gain tube in V1 of the preamp slots....i really don't need this amp i don't use it anywhere near what it's capable of lol.... i've listed it for sale a few times actually on local fb pages. I just don't really need a 100 watt tube amp sitting around in my house - i plan on getting an elevenrack set up soon and probably selling my half stack actually lol...but i don't see anything wrong with the jvm - i have got all kinds of awesome old classic rock tone out of it. my thing is i keep all the gain knobs turned down - the presence almost all the way down - and bring the volume up - then barely bring the gain up until you got what you want
