Yeah, let's see, the D.o.J. is trying to enforce "their" interpretation of India's export law. And why, India is not crying foul? Their government is OK with the export of these woods and allowing it to be shipped. SO, why then is the Gibson company being singled out and not any other users of the same wood?

You know that Gibson contributes to Conservative groups and Republicans right? And who is in office? If you do the math it'll be clear as day. A socialist going after a conservative company? ?? That can't be too surprising. It's how they do things.

I love how most ignore the real problem behind this. Those outside USA I can see not caring but to those living here this should make you start opening your eyes.

Personally I feel people are way too prone to blowing things out of proportion .... and I will add fuel to this every chance I get.

OTOH, it's refreshing to see a country that puts laws into place to protect the jobs of its citizens. Too bad it's not the U.S.

Gibson Guitar in settlement on illegal wood imports

Gibson will pay a $300,000 penalty to avoid criminal charges for importing ebony and rosewood in violation of the Lacey Act, which prohibits the acquisition of plant products that are protected in other countries, the Department of Justice said in a statement.

Well, that's good for Gibson. However between their attorneys and the bloated US government thugs, they probably have 20 times that much tied up in legal fees. At least they can stop with those maple fretboard Les Paul's now.....Les was probably turning somersaults in the grave.

Steve

Maple plank Less Paul....

I see your white fretboard and it makes me sad... :(

I was in the Gibson factory a few weeks ago, they are not happy campers about our comrade in chief ;)
I was looking into a 1275 doubleneck, but they have ceased production of them for now
Had some really cool Lesters in there, along with a Don Felder 1275 (?) in nice glass cases

but what does this mean?

It means Gibson won't be contributing to Sheik Obama's re-election campaign.......

I guess that will show Gibson, contribute to Obama's campaign fund or else....

I would be curious to see what the implications will be. I think one commenter put it correctly though when they wrote, "Anybody that knows ANYTHING about luthiery can easily spot Madagascar Ebony and knows the law. Gibson screwed themselves. It's their own damn fault. Period. End of story." Just that it appears that things were not being enforced in the previous administration. Why would Fender not be made an example of too? Yet, I wonder if it is true where I read Gibson is actually getting the wood back from the 2011 raid?
