I'm interested in a Ethos Overdrive w/HRM EQ. Pricey, but may be worth it. Then there's the Van Weelden Royal Overdrive. So many to choose from.

I had an Ethos HRM. Thought it was decent for some things, but nothing amazing overall. Still sounded very pedal like to me if that makes sense. None of the Dumble style pedals I’ve owned impressed me much (had the mad Professor simble, Shin’s Music Dumbloid, several Jetter’s and Vertex’s), but I’d say the Dumbloid was definitely the best of the bunch. Maybe I’ve beem spoiled by my few keeper pedals. Actually I just got a T Jauernig Smoothly (his take on Dumble/Zen Drive) that’s even better than I remember the Dumbloid being (or at least as good) and I paid under $100 for it, but still not keeping it. Jauernig makes some great stuff though and much more affordable than other pedals anywhere as good. Honestly though very few pedals impress me much these days

I’ve played a real Dumble as well as countless clones (Fuchs, Bludotone, Smartbelle, and many Two Rocks). None of the clones were anywhere near as good (Bludotone thought was closest) and none of the pedals where anywhere near as good as the clones. Just imo and 2 cents

Good to know! I'll pass on the Ethos Overdrive. I have the Ethos TWE-1, which I really dig. Well, I do for now anyway. I'm right there with you on pedals that try to emulate an amplifier. I prefer a great amp at the edge of breakup, and a pedal that kicks power section. Crowther Double Hot Cake, and the TWE-1 are great with VOX and Ampeg.

The best TS type pedal I've found, is the King Of Tone. I actually bought the 68 Pedals King Of Clone version, because I like having the switchable high-gain option for both sides. I use a modified Centura to push my Marshall, and a Skreddy Pig Mine for fuzz with my VOX Heritage. It's cool how specific pedals work with specific circuits... I don't like the TS808 with the VOX, but it sounds great with my 2554 SJ.

The one D style pedal that haunts me, is the Van Weelden Royal Overdrive. I don't think I've heard a bad representation of it, nor have I read a cross word. The price has kept me away, but it's not much more than the Ethos OD. I had a Zendrive 2 w/tube, but I didn't find it to be as dynamic as my other pedals. I don't get the hype that surrounds the Zen 2... I really don't.

I agree about the Centura with the 2554. I used my Klon with the 2554 I had and it was a terrific combo. The 5 od/boost pedals I’ve kept are: Klon Centaur silver (Original), Cameron (1-off prototype overdrive pedal), Jauernig Gristle King V3 Handwired, Coppersound Broadway and Fulltone Custom Ranger. Those last 2 are great for germanium styles boosts. Fuzzes I kept are: ‘70’s Foxx Tone Machine (best fuzz ever), Reissue Foxx Tone Machine, ‘90’s Russian Big Muff Bubble Font, Formula B Soviet Tank, Bumble Buzz and Danelectro French Toast (Foxx Tone Machine clone)

The Crowther Double Hot Cake is about as unique as they come, IMO. It's not your usual mid-boost type drive at all. It may sound scooped to some, but I think that's because people are used to TS charater sound. If anything, it's transparent. You have to be gentle when dialing it in, as it can get wolfy on you when you go too far with the gain as a single sided unit. Stack the Hot Cake and Bluesberry (A+B) together, and then use the center A+B drive knob to dial-in the distortion. I never set the A/B drive knobs above 12 noon. Maybe a little higher on the Bluesbery side, but rarely. I've nearly sold the pedal three times, but what it does is just too unique to part with. I mainly used it for Joe Walsh, Van Halen and Brian May tones. Seems to love my Ampeg GVT15 rig the most. Think... Aerosmith "ROCKS" tones (with Ampeg). The knobs are tight, so you don't have to fuss with marking the dials.

The double hot cake sounds good in the clips I’ve seen. Will be on the lookout for a used one to pop up. There aren’t any double hot cakes on reverb currently. The fact that there are a bunch of clones of it for sale on reverb is another sign that it’s something good

Pedals are one category of gear where it seems I can never know about all them. Just too many out there, the vast majority of them not that great, but I always gotta try a whole lot before finding the really special ones

I've been through a large share of drive pedals, and it's rare that I find anything that I really like. When I plugged into the DHC, I was like... WTF? It took me a couple of weeks to unlock its abilities, and I'm still discovering new settings.

In this clip, listen how Ed teases the amp using the guitar volume. That slight amount of "fuzz" that surrounds the notes at low volume setting, then to full-on gain... The DHC nails this character to a T! This is referred to as its "halo of dirt" effect. Some players don't like this, so they bail on the pedal. To me, it's totally amp-like.

My chain... Guitar -> MXR Smart Gate -> RMC10 wah -> Phase 90 -> Vibe Machine -> ADA flanger -> KOT -> DHC -> Rockman EQ -> T Rex tape echo -> Rockman SC -> Rockman SE -> Ampeg on the left -> VOX (EF86 channel) on the right.

I THOUGHT I'd be smart and buy a big board with both room for my main amp footswitch (which I've always wanted to incorporate onto my board) and growing room for more pedals in the future. Welp... I ended up almost dying in the hospital as I was finishing it, and in the 2years since...it just kind of sits there reminding me of how damn big it is. That said...the signal chain is working great!

I have about 8-10 times in the last year...and I'm now realizing it's too damn big for what I'm doing. Here I thought I'd be adding pedals on and doing a bunch of sh*t (early 2018 viewpoint)... and now I see all of this wasted space making me out of breath when I bring it somewhere.

That said, on a slightly different note....., the music store I recently worked a few years in had a guy who really knew his shit doing pedalboards. So taking what he taught me went a long way. My previous boards were those self-powered Furmans, and they'd always develop noise issues from the onboard power supplies. So at least I was able to put something big with growing room together that has a near silent signal path. (always looking for the silver lining )

That’s similar to how I felt when I had mine. Eventually I had other pedals that I felt captured what I liked about it and decided to sell it. I did though like it better than the other Trainwreck pedals I’ve tried

Maybe a little higher on the Bluesbery side, but rarely. I've nearly sold the pedal three times, but what it does is just too unique to part with. I mainly used it for Joe Walsh, Van Halen and Brian May tones. Seems to love my Ampeg GVT15 rig the most. Think... Aerosmith "ROCKS" tones (with Ampeg). The knobs are tight, so you don't have to fuss with marking the dials.

What is "vintage PQ"? Do you mean parametric EQ?

The double hot cake sounds good in the clips I’ve seen. Will be on the lookout for a used one to pop up. There aren’t any double hot cakes on reverb currently. The fact that there are a bunch of clones of it for sale on reverb is another sign that it’s something good

Pedals are one category of gear where it seems I can never know about all them. Just too many out there, the vast majority of them not that great, but I always gotta try a whole lot before finding the really special ones

I've been through a large share of drive pedals, and it's rare that I find anything that I really like. When I plugged into the DHC, I was like... WTF? It took me a couple of weeks to unlock its abilities, and I'm still discovering new settings.

In this clip, listen how Ed teases the amp using the guitar volume. That slight amount of "fuzz" that surrounds the notes at low volume setting, then to full-on gain... The DHC nails this character to a T! This is referred to as its "halo of dirt" effect. Some players don't like this, so they bail on the pedal. To me, it's totally amp-like.

Just got a double hot cake the other day and you’re descriptions were very accurate. It’s a great pedal! Sounds huge, good for a big wall of sound with lots of low mid presence and almost a fuzzy character. This would’ve sent the buxom boost I used to have packing even faster

The Klon is still my all time favorite boost/overdrive pedal, but this is among 5 that I’m keeping for now. I’ve got a Thorpy Heavy Water coming in tomorrow and still got a few more on my radar: Wizard Leopard, Vahlbruch Kaluna, KSR Eros, Cole Paradrive and 2 more Jauernig’s
