First time buyer, need a speaker cab

I've been playing since about 2007 and I've only had combo amps. I've graduated from a 5w Yamaha to an awful 30w Marshall MG30DFX (god I hate that thing), and then a Fender 212R Frontman which sounds good but I wanted a tube amp. I went to my local guitar stores and tried out a JCM800, JCM900 and JCM2000. I ended up buying a Laney GH50L because it had a nice clean channel and sounded like the JCM800 would distorted. Now that I have my amp I need a good speaker cabinet. I think a 2x12 is fine since I play in my basement and it's got a very low ceiling. If I ever were to play a gig, a 2x12 is probably more than powerful enough for a bar or social club.

I play a mix of thrash & progressive metal like Alice, Tool, Pantera, Judas Priest, my own riffs and yes even some Limp Bizkit. I like their funky guitar sounds, kill me. I'm looking for suggestions on a decent 2x12 cab to match up with this amp. I'd prefer to spend under $500 and of course the less the better. I am a tinkerer an not opposed to buying an empty cabinet and putting in decent speakers if that better fits my budget.

Plenty of choices in style, size, and color, and tons of speaker options. I really like their Hellatone speakers. They take a few different Celestion models and break them in for 15 hours in an ISO room.

I had a Avatar Contemporary 1x12 with the Hellatone version of the V30, sounded great. I would think a 2x12 (or 2 1x12s) with a Greenback and a V30 would sound really good with you Laney, if you're into mixing speaker types.

Used Recto 2x12 is a good cab for not too much.

But if the ceiling is high enough to stand, it's high enough for a 4x12, which don't take up more floor space than a 2x12. I'd watch Craigslist for a marshall or Mesa cab with V30s to pop up.

The EVH 2x12 is pretty awesome and sounds good with many different amps. I use mine with the EVH amp or some of my Marshalls it doesn't disappoint. Plus it has the tilt-back stands which are very handy if you need to get the speakers up towards you.

This ^^^^

I have an EVH 2x12 and it sounds great after being broken in but it doesn't compare to my 4x12 cab and for the music you want to play the extra "thump" of the 4x12 would come in handy!

Well I have considered a 4x12 but my solidstate Fender is a 2x12 and it's already way too loud for my basement. I can't but the volume above 3, but its 100W. I don't live in the suburbs, I live in an urban environment and my neighbors are about 8ft away from me.

Go for a 4x12. They can be played at low volume, and more is better sometimes. Fuller sounding and if you need more volume you have it. Get a used Mesa or Marshall..you can find them for 3-500 used and some are very clean. As I always say check out Guitar Center.com. They'll ship it to you for like 20 bucks. 30 days to return it.

4x12 sounds better to me than a 2x12 at any volume. Best thing I ever did for my "tone" was to buy a 4x12 with nice speakers.
