I traded a guitar for a new Charvel So Cal (MIJ) and ordered the 37mm brass block from Floydupgrades.com to have the shop that I got the guitar from put it in. Well here is the scoop. Well I got a call from the guitar tech who is installing the big block on the Floyd and said that the big block would cause a clunk against the cavity (he did not even put it in yet) due to there not being enough clearance with the big block to allow free motion with the bar (push bar down all the way) compared to the original block. He said could either adjust the Floyd by raising it a bit off of the body and adjust it where the the Floyd base would be angled to get the amount of travel I would need or I would need to have it routed so there is clearance. Would not cost much to rout the cavity out, but WTF?

I tried to contact Chubtone, but he is not reachable at the moment. I told them to wait until I did some research on this. I also ordered a brass big block from Chubtone for my Charvel Mod 1 Pointy Headstock (2005 reissue), I hope that works out too.

Any suggestions?

I answered your PM but won't comment in here yet as to not sway the answers in any particular direction.

Has anyone put a big block on a Charvel So Cal without any routing?

I think that is pretty common with the big blocks. They are bigger than the stock piece. You could try a Titanium block I believe they are the same size as the stock blocks.

This is why I have never tried one myself, I like my Floyd to float.

Yeah, I used to like it to float, but none of my guitars with Floyds float these days. I heard Titanium blocks were bright.

I have a 42mm in mine and yea, it won't allow me to dive 100% so that the bar touches the body.....but it'll still dive about 80-90% which is good enough for me.

Is it an "L" block? I've upgraded all my MIJ Socals with the regular brass blocks, but they are setup slightly raised to float. I had no problems with clearance using the 37mm blocks. The only way mine will hit the cavity is if I'm trying to pull back on the bar too far. It's still got some pull back range though, plenty for my uses. I can bottom out the trem bar on a dive without hittin the cavity. The blocks I have are the same size as the blocks from Chub, one is actually from him. I did find the 42mm block will impede some movement on the dives, but it's still not a factor for my uses.

Mine is the regular 37mm block from Floydupgrades although I did buy one from Chubs last week to have installed in my USA Charvel Pointy (2005 Reissue). Are the ones from Chub a different thickness then the ones at Floydupgrades.com?

Is your block from Floyduprades.com or from Chubtone?

I ordered a block from floydupgrades and it was the wrong size, my fault. I called and he told me to send it back and I got the right size within a day or two.

Well I got the correct size as far as the length and that is how Floydsupgrade.com recommends as far as how to measure it.

Hmm. I put it in a USA model, like an 09? Are the new MIJ models different?
