Floyd Rose Tuning... what a bitch

this is gonna sound stupid, but be careful about the torque on the lockers if your are using the standard parts. upgrading to stainless parts from floyd upgrades or one of the other companies is a sure way to keep from having an "uh-oh" moment before a show.

Oooh, good point.

I see people all the time tightening stuff on Floyds with Gorilla hands. All you need is a snug fit on the pads to hold the strings, and the bolts that hold the lock nut.

I have seen many a cracked neck due to over tightening the bolts.

i would add that this tool has been around for a while. i probably bought my first one 10 or more years ago. can't believe that everyone with a floyd doesn't have a couple of these lying around somewhere.

I can never get my intonation correct with this tool. Tried many times. To me its crap, but maybe others have luck with it. I also use a strobe tuner that tunes within one cent.

Never had to set intonation on any of mine. What is the technique without the tool?

Once the guitar is all set up, neck, action, etc. check the intonation. Harmonic at twelth fret should be perfectly in tune with the fretted note. If the fretted not is sharper than the harmonic move the saddle backward until they both match. If frtted note is flat move saddle forward. I do one string at a time and you have to loosen the string. I also put small washers under my saddle bolts to keep the bolt from wearing on the saddle. Not related to intonation though. Gotoh Floyds have the washers.

Ah okay thought there was some trick to it so you wouldn't keep having to detune and take a best guess at saddle placement.

Always hated the Floyd setup, break a string during a gig and that guitar is done for the night.

Really the only way to get it right is to detune the string and guess at it. I usually get it on the second try.

I broke two at the same time not long ago. Was trying to just carry the rest of the song and one finger it through on the E string, but it got so far out of whack, it was done. I've got 4 big blocks coming from KTS, which in the event of another breakage, it will keep that in check. I think I was over-tightening the string retainer screws as they were breaking at the trem. Fucking Elixer's too!

You know you have fine tuners that you use after you lock the nut, right?

totally, if i get a trem it's a vintage style/floating one , as much as i miss the crazy dive bombs, the general setup and annoyances outweighed the advantages of the trem, not to mention the tone

Well just to update, I haven't a clue why but when I put my guitar down friday night i swear the tuning was being fussy. Picked it up this morning, tweaked the fine tuners, bingo in tune. Makes no sense but I'll take it.. def does go sharp when i tighten the lock nuts though, I'll look into string retainer issues. Soo far the tuning it a cent lower is the way to go as well as setting the fine tuners about half way.

Guthrie spoke yesterday about rather dealing with the hassle of non locking bridges than use them

Landau = no locking

Old vh = no locking

Holdsworth = no lock

my tone and playing heroes didnt need them so I'm in good company.

If Floyd got rid of the Allen wrenches and made the system more physically transparent and easier to set action and intonation I'd consider it.

Oh yeah ej and SRV and robben f and Henderson and Joe b and Carlton and Gary Moore and Sykes

zero floyd
Mega tone

But Moore and Sykes went to floyds at one point and they still had mega tone so really...

*sigh*

A floyd rose does not "rob" tone anymore than any other tremolo. However, a floating tremolo will not transfer vibration the same way it would resting against the body of the guitar. Some people say this thins out sound, but given the many variables in any particular guitar, YMMV.

Quit making sense.
