Floyds, top mount vs recessed.

i like d-tunas and I have a hard time getting recessed to fit. Surface for me.

Back in the '80s Charvel didn't offer the neck pocket angled but I do prefer the neck & body more parallel than say a LP degree...
I also love the Floating aspect with Floyd's I feel I can articulate melodies & solos more to my style, incl. vibrato single or double stop chords.

Recessed for me and lower profile. Top mounted floyd's always would interfere with my picking hand especially higher up on the neck. The Gotoh Floyd/Ibanez Edge or Ibanez Low Pro are the ones I like. All have a lower profile than a regular floyd.

Top mount is the way, the truth and the light.

For me it's all about feel. Top mount feels better every time. And, if you have a stiff playing guitar with a top mount Floyd, try increasing the neck angle even more by using a slight shim(not full length; just in the far end of the pocket) in the neck pocket. Works every time. Much harder to do that with a recessed Floyd, should the need arise.

I have had many recessed Floyds over the years and no issues. All three of my current guitars are top mounted and they sound and play great. I'm good with either setup.

Depends. I like a dtuna, but also hate a dtuna. With it, I prefer top mount, without a dtuna I prefer recessed.

Top mounted. Hate floating. Tuning is easier, break a string and you are still in tune.

Peavey Wolfgang Standards have a slightly recessed route so the Floyd sits lower, but still on the body, to keep action lowered.

The PV WG Specials did not have the slight recess

The carved top Wolfgangs have a slight recess to give the bridge a flat surface to sit on. The flat tops don't need it.

I have both and I like both hahaha ... mind you all my top mounted are still floating. I have one top mount that I have a block in so it only dives and honestly it annoys me hahahaha

I prefer mounted on top for most guitars. It's more stable and easier to work with. I do have a couple of guitar with recessed Floyds for those times I need to do pull-ups on them, but that's rare so not worth dealing with most of the time. Plus, there is a noticeable difference in how they sound/react between the two.

100% top mounted. Recessed makes me feel like I am running out of range for drops and I rarely need to pitch up and do the Dimebag squeal so it's a no brainer for me. Also looks way cooler.

Recessed cause Geometry!

Much harder (not impossible) to properly build and set-up a guitar with a non-recessed Floyd. The neck pocket angle, neck nut, locking nut and several other things have to be just right... and with most guitars, they are not... and string height will always sit higher than on a recessed Floyd.
