Sunday Ryan and I locked in the studio and nailed down the core tone for my new record. I wanted to record a real amp and not use the AxeFXII so we set to getting a killer tone to use. We chose the 6505+ and I snapped a few pics of the settings for the amp and pre/eq to make sure I could fix it if we bump something. I figured I'd share in case anyone else has a 6505+ and wants to see.

Chain:
Ibanez RG1527 w/ Dimarzio Liquifire
ISP Decimator
Maxon OD808 (Overdrive zeroed, Balance dimed, Tone at noon)
Peavey 6505+

We're double tracking the guitars with Fluff's patented secret technique (patent pending, ask him to elaborate) and the tracks sound absolutely (h)UGE! That's how Donald Trump says it.

Clips, and can you really patent a recording technique???

@maddnotez that was a joke :) it's not patented, he ripped it off of Jerry Cantrel. lol

I played a 6505+ for about 3 years and your settings are very similar. Shit, almost exact. I didn't boost though.

Dude, I'm eating lunch :) That profile photo... damn. lol

A boosted 6505 will always sound good/typical, in any application.
Kind of like the cheeseburger of the modern high gain world. I just prefer my 6505 sans Velvetta.

Hey...

I just bought a new 6505+ today to go with my new Engl Savage 120...

I see your using a Maxon 808... I am looking to buy an 808 type of pedal and it is kind of confusing with all the flavors if tube screamer out there...

Just wondering what you thought of the Ibanez Vintage Reissue 808 with the small square switch in comparison to the Maxon 808... I heard the Ibanez was a bit warmer?

I have been using the OD-9 for ages now and love it with rectifers and Marshalls. I think the 6505+ needs a boost that does not have that mid hump in it like the OD-9 has...

I liked the green rhino A LOOOOT!! as far as boosts go. For the mid hump, scoop the amps mids a bit, and BAM...magic.

I recently stopped boosting amps, but the Green Rhino was my last favorite OD pedal for boosting. Between having that and an 808, you are golden for all your boosting needs.

but why ^^^^^ No boost????

It just sounds so right.

Meh, after years of doing it I realized it was the boost that was doing all the heavy lifting. I'd turn off the boost and my high gain amp would sound like a fat, wet noodle without it because the gain was dialed back so far in order to boost it.
You only need a minimal amount of gain, pushed overdrive really, to get a high octane boosted tone with a boost pedal.

I changed my approach to eqing & picking and got better pickups and that was it.
Sure, most low-med gain amps need boosting for a certain level of modern metal tightness.
I'm more about the feel and the touch of plugging straight into a high gain amp. No extra cables, power supplies or pedal tone influencing the signal.

While I still play HEAVY music, I don't obsess over triplets and how tight that stuff is anymore. That's easy to do. Just boost it, like everyone else! But, if you play tight, it will sound tight. If it's not saturated enough, get a different amp.

Boosting is easy I guess though, because it's often a $100 fix for an amps precieved short comings. I get that, been there.

Now, as a result, soooo many boosted high gain amps sound the same to me now. Seems like the easy way out. All my amps sounded the same because they were all boosted with their own personality sucked out of the sound because their preamp was set so low and weak.

I don't slather ketchup or BBQ sauce all over every one of my meals to make it "taste" better, why do I do it with my guitar tone?

I used to have a Budda that I boosted, and it stood tall next to my boosted 6505 for modern metal riffing, and that's basically an vintage Marshall vibe amp. :student:

I have a VHT Pitbull 100w, sounds great with max gain and no boost, but sounds tighter and smoother with a boost and less gain to my ears.
