For guys with a SPLAWN Quickrod question.

I have a 2005 QuickRod. I can nail all the tones that you are asking for. And I don't have all the new bells and whistles of the new models. I will also agree that for the price point, Splawns can't be touched for the modded Marshall vibe.

I had a few QR’s and just got a new 2018 with all the new features... by far the best Splawn I have owned...Scott changed some things in the new ones... And yes you can get all those tones you want out of a QR...Scott is the best in the business and a great guy...his prices are the best out of any boutique builders...All quality builds and his cabs are solid as well...

I play a Splawn full stack and it’s pure 80s nirvana. Own a lot of amps but every show I play my quickrod. It’s just the perfect tone for me. Can’t go wrong with one

i love splawns and have much respect for scott. i always boosted mine...i’ve had 4 of them. 3 QR’s and a competition. great amps. you need a cab that has less air. splawns are damn bass heavy in tone. i got mucho mucho compliments in tone when using it live with a carvin slant. when using with my splawn straight cab, people would tell me they couldn’t hear me. might be something to do with eminence speakers too. as they have more lows. carvin wasn’t loaded with them.

Oh hey, the guy that got my Competition years ago!! :) What's going on man. Glad I started a Splawn floodgate. LOL! I can't remember, did you have a Splawn before you bought mine?

yeah. had a 2006 orange one which was a monster. traded it to Bill on here for his Baron B60. mistake there, haha. Baron was good, but my ears were just used to the QR. so i got a 2012 next...didn’t care for the smoothness. was used to the raw aggression, sold it and found another 2005 and that rocked. only sold it cuz wasn’t playing out anymore, and it’s pretty damn loud. sold that competition about a year after i got it from ya. QR was more versatile in my situation.

now i just play the EVH 2x12 combo. it’s the only amp i own, and i don’t think i will ever go the head/cab route again after years and years and years of trial. i am more than happy with it. if scott ever decides to dive into a “metal” combo amp though, i might have to try it. haha

Yeah the older I get and after hernia surgeries, I wouldn't be surprised if down the road I have a Splawn 1lb mini combo. LOL

I friggin LOVED the Drop b+ I had. I really didn't want to get rid of it, but I went a little nutso with amps and it got nudged by a Wizard. I will own another Splawn someday. Probably try a Nitro next time.

Maybe the new ones with the mid and new/old switch are different, but I liked the old ones A LOT more. I had late 2006 Prod Mod with 6550s and a late 2006 Quickrod. Both had the 4 preamp tubes. No loop volumes. These amps were mean as f***, incredible tone. I later got a 2012 QR and a 2014 50-watt QR. They were nice, and built like a tank as you’d expect. I just wasn’t excited about either of those heads! And I loved the earlier ones to death. I sold them in 2011 after my band broke up and missed them but couldn’t get the tone back with the more recent ones.

I understand your point here. However, you were “in between” with the 2012 and 2014.
The more recent, loaded models have new/old switches that gives you the structure of the older QR’s that we all thought were mean and aggressive. Honestly, I still kept my 2006, even though I have 2 of the new models. Just couldn’t let it go...

Still, the latest QR’s have the juice, IMO.
Of course YMMV and everyone hears things differently.
End of the day, LOVE my Splawn QR’s

Yes the new ones especially the 2018 model which had more changes are much more aggressive and meaner...I have played them all from the early years to now and this 2018 is the best I have heard...

So what's different in the 2018 that makes it meaner vs. a 2015?

The last thing I need right now is another amp ... so stop making me want one!!!

Yes, do tell. I had a 2013 Drob+ and thought it was pretty mean sounding. If the 2018 is even meaner, well.......that's food for thought right there  One of the greatest amps I've ever owned, and I only just sold it a couple weeks ago and regret it.

I’m not trying to cause anyone issues here, well....

What I said was the earlier (read 2006) models were “mean and aggressive” and that’s one of the things that many of us loved about them. However, they also didn’t have many of the features that the newer models have at this point.
I don’t own a 2018 QR, yet I do own 2 loaded QR’s. Amps with mid switch, new/old switch, B+ switch, sweet effects loop, great clean channel, and 4 button foot switch (for Channel, OD, Gear, Solo switching).

The idea being, you can have ALL of these wonderful things in one amp now.
That’s all I’m saying. This wasn’t an option in 2012 or 2014, when Phil mentioned trying out a couple QR’s. That was my point...

If anyone/everyone is happy with what they have, KICK *SS. No need to read more of these posts. However, if you’ve tried one in the past and haven’t tried one more recently, you may want to investigate these amps again. There are current options that I see as nice improvements.
And seriously, IMO Splawn is “The Best” at their price point, YYMV.

Now go play...loudly

OK, so... Something pretty pivotal here: were there more changes made to the amp in 2018?

Bingo...Well said... like I said I have played and owned a bunch of splawn QR’s... I had the very first QR in 2016 when Scott started adding the new switches.... Amp sounded great as he made some changes that year to the board...I just got a 2018 with all the same features and there were also some more tweaks which to my ears put the amp where I always wanted it to be... Amp is totally killer and as good as any amp I ever had through my cave.....And can’t stress enough that his prices are off the charts great for what you are getting...

OK, so it sounds like some tonal/feel changes were made this year/2018. Can you elaborate on that? This is the first thread I've seen that mentions 'changes' to the QR for 2018. I'm having second thoughts on selling my 2014 B+ Pro Stock, because I've fallen in love with it again. ...and I want one with all the switching options.

What are these donal tweaks you speak of? What do they sound like? Cheers!

Yeah, I would be curious to hear about this as well. I got a bit confused reading some of the posts because it sounded like there were the old ones, then the updated ones with the switches and additional options. Now it seems like there is a third thing which is that the tones changed a bit in 2018 due to updates Scott did on the boards. Is that correct?
