Thanks to a few of you guys (mainly Ron H and Steve K), I finally found our new dog. I did a lot of research and talked to quite a few breeders in the process and then I just waited for the time to be right...

She is just lovely. She is a bullmastiff and the kids named her Sydney. I need better pics but for now these will have to do. She can't sit still long enough for me to use my good camera so the phone pics will have to suffice. She is just great.

Thank you! Honestly, I was not in love with the pics I saw of her before we met, but as soon as I saw her, she melted my heart. My girls took one look at her and just fell in love! I think my husband loves her too but he is pretty freaked out by the size of her paws...

A tenant on my route a few years ago had two of them, Atlas and Titan. They were HUGE!!...but big freakin babies lol. They knew me well and would slob all over me when I was there fixing stuff

Beautiful pup!!! I love Bull Mastiffs but they will try your patience without a doubt. They are very slow to mature...about 3 years before they "grow up" (mentally, not physically...she will get big, fast!), and can have numerous health issues. Another case where the AKC has effectively ruined a great breed by focusing on conformation rather than health and working ability (I despise the AKC and how they've ruined breed after breed...making it much more difficult to get a "good", functional dog).

Congrats and good luck...she's a beauty!

This is one of the most inaccurate arguments made about dog breeds. For those that prefer to be "underground", it is easy to think that the AKC somehow "ruins" breeds, but that is just not the case. Breeders breed dogs, AKC provides paperwork. The exposure that comes with being an AKC breed can appear detrimental, in the sense that an influx of inexperienced breeders rush to the scene. Experienced, accomplished breeders are still doing what they've always done. My breed (Cane Corso) went AKC in 2010 and I will be the first to tell you that there are more newbies than ever. The thing is, most of the newbies coming on now have previous experience with other breeds. In the "rare breed" era, the newbies were completely new to dogs and came with little or no knowledge of competing and breeding.

Truth be told, Bullmastiffs are currently enjoying excellent health and temperament, which is why I recommended the breed to Laura. There are crap dogs to be found in any breed, but for those that are willing to do their homework (as did Laura), there are great dogs available in most breeds. Some have been sacrificed for the sake of winning, but the breeders are the ones doing the damage, not the AKC. I don't subscribe to the "win at all cost" philosophy.

I completely disagree with what you've said. I've been involved with dog training since I was a kid, have an uncle who trains K-9 for police use, and have followed rare and working breeds for many years.

I said nothing about a Bull Mastiff having a poor temperament...they have a great temperament. Unfortunately most of them have lost the "proper" temperament and its a crap shoot to fins one with true working ability (much like other protective breeds). One need look no further than a comparison of a true German Shepherd vs a pretty "Americanized" GS with it's sloped back sleek look (and subsequent hip issues). There's a reason why nearly all working German Shepherds, Giant Schnauzers, Boxers, Rottweilers, and Dobermans are imported from Germany...they breed for function over form.

As for Bull Mastiff (or nearly any other large molosser breed) health, what is their average life span these days? That ought to put that subject to rest.

I stand by my statement that AKC confirmation ruins the health and functional ability of dogs. Sure, there are some responsible breeders putting out great dogs...this is the exception and not the rule.

Edit: I'm done discussing this in Laura's thread about her awesome new pup. I'll be happy to continue the debate in off-topic or via PM.

That's a super cute pup and looks like she'll grow into a great looking dog. Congrats!

Congrats laura, very cute!! Me and my wife dont have kids but we treat our dog like one!

Awesome pooch Laura! My wife would very much like a mastiff for our next, we'll see though!

congrats-we have an english. he's 210 and holding. if you ever wanna breed her with mine give me a shout. he's a "tiger" brindle. apricot and black, instead of fawn and black. pretty rare.

The dog looks lovely; congratulations. My cousin has both male and female bullmastiffs and they are two of the most well behaved and sweetest dogs I've ever met. My own dog is in his "trying" phase now.
