Ditched the EVH stuff for Engl. I would like to pick up a 6505 though at some point down the road.

I highly recommend the plus version , for me just all around better sounding/feeling amp allthough the original does have that big fat lowend thats crushing for palm mutes . The plus is clearer, tighter, less fizzy, less aggresive in the low mids. Clean channel is just as good if not better than even the EVH clean and the crunch is really versatile. The red channel has sent lots of amps packing for me, Its nuts I prefer it over amps that are way more expensive . Peavey got it right with the 6505+ IMO

Good to know. Thanks for the description man. I'd definitely try both for sure but tighter and less fizzy is always good in my book

Sold my 5153 LBX and went back to to the Jet City JCA22H. I'm a rock rather than metal player, so mega-high gain isn't needed. And for the gain levels I use, the Jet City has a warmer, more Van Halen-y tone.

I'm not usually a tube rolling guy, but I tried a few things today based on this thread (12au7 in V2 & V3) as well as this one that pumps the Sovtek LPS in positions V2 and V5
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=124599&p=1979196&hilit=sovtek+lps+evh#p1979196

I have a 5150 50w modded by Jens Kruse to Stealth specs
(I've also played the standard EVH 100w a lot)

I love the blue channel with gain maxxed, sometimes gain around noon
But red was tough to use live because it seemed a bit out of control even with the gain around 11 oclock.

I tried the 12au7 in V2 & V3. Really cool! With gain on full it was less than the blue, so that wouldn't work for me.
I then tried
V2: LPS
V3: JJ 12au7

Now this ^was very close to what I wanted, but still just a bit more tame than I wanted. I imagine many players would love this

flipped it and found the magic:
V2: 12au7
V3: LPS

This was awesome! It retains most of the ferocious girth and power but allows full use of the gain- cool tones from 9oclcok to maxxed. I tried the original 12ax7 in V3 but that brought back some extra noise, so back to the LPS

I have the LPS in V5 and the rest stock
Thanks to all the tube rollers because these changes were very positive

I might try the 12 au7 in my DMoll channel 2 if I can figure out where to put it. I tend to use ch3 for my brootz and ch2 for lighter mid gain stuff; I bet a 12au7 may work well for me

I'm just going to post one more time because this tube combination is truly awesome in the 50w:
V2: 12au7
V3: LPS

After a few days I'm thinking this is one of my favorite tones of all time, really special.

Diezel D - Moll, I loved the EVH5153 50 watter i had. I didn't think i would ever swap it, i regard it as one of the best amps in its price range (i've tried most). I purchased the D - Moll without trying it first, which was a massive risk, but i really love it even after the honeymoon period.

The Diezel is by far and away the best amp i've ever owned. Having said that, if the band split up i couldn't justify keeping it around ( i have a young family and money doesn't exactly grow on tree's!!) but i would look at the lunch box 5150 for jamming in the house or at a pub/bar.

Hey Luke, could you tell me more about your findings between the two?
I have the 50W EVH and am contemplating the D-Moll actually, as a nice-to-have extra.

@jinch0; I have the Mark V:25 as well, and that gets the most playtime at home, because of the awesome clean channel (which not even the Ironball can touch).
In terms of ease-of-use, better controllable master volume, mid-gain Marshall-esque tones and a tight high gain tone, the Ironball has the slight advantage.

By the way, I would personally never get rid of a Mark series in favour of an Archon... the clean channel magic in the Marks will be lost then, and I found the gain channel of the Archon nice, but a dime-a-dozen and borderline Recto-ish, but tighter. I wouldn't be surprised if the Archon 50 sounds kinda close to a Mesa DC-5.

If Engl were to come out with a 40-50W EL34 Invader/Ironball/Savage, 2.5 channel with boost and footswitchable fx-loop, I'm game. And there's very little info out there about the Randall Thrasher 50... :(

I went back to an VooDoo modded 5150. Just a better amp for my taste.

Mine is not in use, but I can't quite push myself to put it up for sale. Too many bands getting slaying tones from it

For me it's my Randall Thrasher 120. I sold my EVH 50 head after deciding of which to keep and the Thrasher is tighter and clearer. It can be tailored to sound pretty much exactly how I want it. Loved the EVH though. Would really like an LBX down the road. They make a Thrasher 50 would like to try one as well as my 120 weighs too GD much. The Friedman BE OD thru my 4lb Quilter is fun as well. Love that pedal!
Just got the Quilter Mini 101 and it is a loud little SOB!
